Dimitri's Cocktail Disco is not your dad's lounge record. Instead what Cocktail Disco has is an eclectic mix of Disco tracks that you probably haven't heard before.

The Cocktail Disco style was called Sleaze back in its’ heyday, from roughly 1976 to 1979. There were even DJs specializing in the Sleaze sound which was usually played after hours, in spots with a strong sex oriented drive.





Cocktail Disco has that ubiquitous 4/4 beat and flying open high hat, complemented by rich orchestrations, campy over the top vocals, and an often tropical latin vibe. Something that wouldn't feel out of place in a broadway musical. The indie label releases usually meant lower producing budgets, which translated in less polished recordings giving the music a rawer, more appealing sound to me.




"Cocktail Disco" a double CD compilation was released in June from UK's BBE label, and available worldwide through the usual channels. The focus is more on the indie and harder to find songs rather than on the major players which have been thouroughly compiled or re-issued.

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY :: R.I.P

Loleatta Holloway has died aged 64 following a short period of ill health. Her manager Ron Richardson broke the news last night.

Holloway was perhaps best known for her 1980 disco hit Love Sensation, which was later sampled by Black Box for their 1989 club smash Ride On Time. Her vocals were originally used without credit, but she successfully sued the band and received an undisclosed share of the royalties.

This is just one of many occasions on which Holloway's vocals have been sampled, while she also a sang on Dan Hartman's original version of Relight My Fire, which was later covered by Take That. Salsoul Orchestra classic Runaway features her vocals, too.

The second volume of Danny Krivit's Edits By Mr. K series sees the master editor, DJ, and record collector dipping into his extensive crates to put his magic touch on personal favorites and floor fillers from the golden age of disco and soul. On "(Do The) Spanish Hustle," Fatback Band's breakout hit from 1976, Krivit leads with the break, slowly building momentum until catharsis comes nearly four minutes into the track. It's a driving, uptempo track which highlights the beginning of funk's evolution into disco, and a terrific slice of dance floor gold. Edits By Mr. K Volume 2: Music Of The Earth comes out September 14th on Strut.

1st heard this on a compilation album called "Boogie Bus" in 78 or 79 and always loved it, its never mentioned as one of the Hayes classics but I thinks its as good as Shaft? You can just imagine all the moves being made to this on the "Soul Train" dance floor..

With each of these DJ Q&As we do, it's becoming increasingly obvious: Sweater Funk has become a hot night (and in that steamy basement venue, we mean that phrase in more ways than one) for San Francisco funk. When the rest of the city goes to bed early for the big week ahead, DJs and dancers alike take it down to Chinadown to sweat out the best in boogie disco every Sunday. Helping lead the charge is DJ Guillermo, a dude who DJs pretty much everything but mash-ups. He's got crates of everything from hip-hop to Latin groove to old school disco. And from the sound of things, he can also make a mean breakfast scramble.

Depends on the night. Any thing from old Colombian cumbias, new underground hip-hop, boogie disco, 70's & early 80's pop/post punk, dirty soul, funk, Brazilian, salsa, house, dub, dancehall....choose one of my nights, you're bound to find something you'll like.
So what's your story, in 100 words or less? Decided to DJ in Long Beach, CA. in 1998, when I started my own Latin night. I later became a resident at a local soul club called Get On The Good Foot, then moved to San Francisco in 2005. Since then I've been paying my dues while trying to push a grittier & more authentic Latin sound and a funky boogie disco sound. Thank god I fell in with some of the coolest DJ's in the city! Not just in the crews I play with, but with the caliber of folks we have rolling through our nights to hear the tunes. I'm constantly trying to keep the heads interested and the dancefloor happy.
