THE NEW YORK SALSA EXPLOSION 1968-1985

Strut are proud to be associated with the greatest and most important Latin American music label of them all, Fania. Tagged “the Latin Motown”, Fania is perhaps most famous for its recordings during the coming of age of salsa from the late ‘60s to the mid-‘80s, when Latin (often Cuban) dance formats like rumba, guaracha, mambo, son and cha cha fused with big band American jazz and the gritty punch of US R&B in the unique melting pot of New York.

Strut begin their programmed of Fania albums with the first in the Fania Essential Recordings series, tracing the development of the many styles that matured on the label from Latin soul to salsa and boogaloo. The first instalment, Salsa Explosion, provides an essential introduction to the classic Fania sound through some of the label’s major artists including Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaria, Willie Colon, Hector Lav

In joining forces with Fania, the undisputed powerhouse of Latin music labels, Strut hopes to bring a new set of fans into the fold. Salsa Explosion is a wonderful introduction into the vast sea of classic and influential music in the Fania catalog, touching on many of the separate styles that make up the salsa movement. Strut is proud to offer the collection with completely new artwork, liner notes from Latin music afficionado Ernesto Lechner, and a wealth of previously unpublished photos.

ALLEN THAYER - CAL TAJDER

Great article/mix on Cal Tjader from Allen Thayer. Check out the whole story on SOUL SPECTRUM. You might learn something new and discover some great music.

Allen Thayer:

I've been working on my Tjader collection since moving to the Bay Area and have nearly completed the 1965-1975 era, which is probably my favorite as it sees Tjader trying to stay hip and relevant and doing a pretty damn good job. The early sixties saw him switch from the Bay Area-founded Fantasy Records to the more nationally-focused Verve Records where he scored his biggest hit, "Soul Sauce". His mid-sixties Verve albums range from soft ballads to funky latin fusion and are all excellent listens. In the late 60s he founded Skye records with like-minded musical oddballs: Gabor Szabo and Gary McFarland and released three albums: Solar Heat, Sounds Out Burt Bacharach and Plus In. A recently released session from those years "Latin + Jazz = Cal Tjader" is particularly revelatory in that it represented, according to Tjader's biographer, Cal's preferred live repertoire: a couple ballads mixed in with some mid-tempo Latin-Jazz numbers.

BITMAN & ROBAN

The dynamic DJ and crew from Chile stir up an intoxicating mix of electronic, funk, hip-hop, Latin, and lounge on their stateside debut. Infectious beats are laced with bilingual lyrics and are sure to make a splash in American dance clubs. Led by DJ Bitman, the band has already won heavy airplay and video play for the clip "Tatita". Bitman & Roban's music was used in several prominent indie films ("Secuestro Express", "Yellow"), and they handled remixes for Grammy-nominated Latin-alternative act Babasonicos.

R.I.P BOBBY ESPINOSA OF EL CHICANO

El Chicano's sound blended funk, jazz, rock and R&B. The East L.A. group had top-40 hits in the '70s with 'Viva Tirado' and 'Tell Her She's Lovely.'

Bobby Espinosa, second from left, played keyboard for El Chicano. The East L.A. band had top-40 hits in the 1970s with "Viva Tirado" and "Tell Her She's Lovely." "El Chicano hit a groove that defined 'Latin soul' on the West Coast," said guitarist and producer Ry Cooder.

LATIN BITMAN

“Bitman’s music may touch down in Brazil for a swipe of samba, skip up to New York for some hip-hop scratching, move over to Jamaica for a hit of reggae, and park in Puerto Rico for a dash of salsa, but his sensibility filters all those sounds into songs you can both sing and dance to.”

NEW Cumbia | DJ Sabo | Bersas Discos

Over the summer I hit up NYC a few times & got to run into DJ Sabo @ Turntable Lab. Over the years through my friends J-Boogie (om records SF) & DJ Duane (Seasons Recordings | Fishing) I've gotten familiar with Sabo's music so it was great to chop it up with him about Serato/CD-J's/Vinyl's etc & many new tunes and sounds coming out.

He put me on to a few 45's of Cumbia music which I copped in the store. Fast fwd a few months & Sabo put out a really dope 12" of Cumbia related tunes on Bersa Discos.

Take a listen & download one of the tracks HERE (via FADER BLOG)

GRUPO FANTASMA

Grupo Fantasma
are a jamming funk band comprised of members from all over Latin America who are based in Austin, Texas.

It’s an incredible and animated performance interwoven with mature and intelligent songwriting that is equally at home with the classic 1960s Fania All-Stars sound AND the progressive benchmark set by artists such as Manu Chao. Guided by the deeply rooted traditions of cumbia, salsa, funk, and pyschedelia this masterful ensemble band has forged a fresh new standard of excellence in latin music.

OCOTE SOUL SOUND - COCONUT ROCK

Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective band-leaders of famed ensembles Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas, once again unite under the Ocote Soul Sounds banner for their new full length album, Coconut Rock, released on ESL Music on June 23rd. After two stellar albums, this time around Coconut Rock finds the duo loosened up, slipping effortlessly into their trademark psychedelic afro-latin funk groove. From the descarga rhythms of album lead-off The Revolt of the Cockroach People to the cumbia bounce of Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo to the easy guitar soundscapes of Vendendo Saude e Fe featuring Brazilian songstress Tita Lima, Coconut Rock is the third chapter in Ocote Soul Sound's unparalleled journey through sonic realms beyond!

DJ GUILLERMO = SWEATER FUNK / MAGNIFICENT 7

With each of these DJ Q&As we do, it's becoming increasingly obvious: Sweater Funk has become a hot night (and in that steamy basement venue, we mean that phrase in more ways than one) for San Francisco funk. When the rest of the city goes to bed early for the big week ahead, DJs and dancers alike take it down to Chinadown to sweat out the best in boogie disco every Sunday. Helping lead the charge is DJ Guillermo, a dude who DJs pretty much everything but mash-ups. He's got crates of everything from hip-hop to Latin groove to old school disco. And from the sound of things, he can also make a mean breakfast scramble.

Name: Jacob Pena aka DJ Guillermo

Club night(s):
Sweater Funk - 80's funk, boogie disco, soulful steppers (every sunday night @ Li Po, free 9pm- 1:30am). The Magnificent 7 - Funk, hip hop, disco, house, dancehall, rock and anything else we feel like throwing into the mix (@ various clubs around the city). Colombia! - Classic cumbia, salsa & Afro Latin (@ various venues around the city). Mercy, Mercy Baby - Soul, boogaloo, Brazilian & rocksteady (every 2nd Weds. @ Casanova - free 9pm-2am). Good Friends and Evil Companions - Could be power pop, post punk, samba soul, hip-hop or whatever else I'm in the mood for that night, but it's always a good time! (every 1st sat. & 3rd thurs @ Dalva, free, 10pm-2am). Behind The Groove - Sweater Funk & Hear The Sounds crew play boogie, electro funk & more @ Koko every 4th Saturday - free 9pm-2am.

Style(s) of music you spin:
Depends on the night. Any thing from old Colombian cumbias, new underground hip-hop, boogie disco, 70's & early 80's pop/post punk, dirty soul, funk, Brazilian, salsa, house, dub, dancehall....choose one of my nights, you're bound to find something you'll like.
So what's your story, in 100 words or less? Decided to DJ in Long Beach, CA. in 1998, when I started my own Latin night. I later became a resident at a local soul club called Get On The Good Foot, then moved to San Francisco in 2005. Since then I've been paying my dues while trying to push a grittier & more authentic Latin sound and a funky boogie disco sound. Thank god I fell in with some of the coolest DJ's in the city! Not just in the crews I play with, but with the caliber of folks we have rolling through our nights to hear the tunes. I'm constantly trying to keep the heads interested and the dancefloor happy.
