MOODYMAN :: PICTURE THIS

Moodymann is the nom de disc of Detroit native Kenny Dixon, Jr. An iconoclast with a funkdafied hairdo, Moodymann has built up a devoted listenership over the past two decades with his unique, mutant productions. Often pitched between high-fidelity and infidelity, Moodymann tracks are for those moments when hitting the dancefloor feels the same as rustling the sheets. Purveyor of the label Mahogani Music, Moodymann now connects with Scion A/V to deliver Picture This, eight exclusive tracks of Motor City magic. Dig it!

OMAR S. FEATURING THEO PARRISH

If you've been a long time reader of HTS, you already know about my love affiliation with Detroit Techno. Two, of my favorite producers from the "D" linked up and created the track which is a collaborative effort along with fellow Detroiter Theo Parrish, High School Graffiti! A five song EP for free download through Scion A/V.

The video, directed by Fangs de Oro, compliments Omar's affinity for old video games by using 8-bit graphics akin to the Nintendo or Atari systems.

REVOKE :: TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY :: DETROIT

REVOK / TRIUMPH & TRAGEDY / VICIOUS GALLERY / DEC. 3RD from WWW.REVOK1.COM on Vimeo.

REVOK's been picking the through the ghost houses abandoned by the families that once lived there and subsequently vandalised (ha, irony). Rescuing relics from the ruins and breathing new life into them as part of his sculptures, we saw a preview of this new direction in the Perseverance group show. This one, Triumph and Tragedy will be his first solo show in Berlin.

THEO PARRISH :: SOUND SIGNATURE

Nothing beats Theo Parrish tracks on a cold, murky, rainy San Francisco afternoon. I can appreciate the Electronic, Techno sounds from Detroit. Theo Parrish is a master at combining the most ugliest of sounds to something so beautiful.

I feel a Deep House, Down-Tempo mix is over due. Coming soon.

Enjoy this Theo Parrish track, Nov, 2010.

OMAR S :: DETROIT SOUL

Omar S A name that comes up quite often around Detroit heads, is a name you should get familiar with. Omar S has a unique style which he calls "psychedelic soul-funk tech-house dubs of the future" and gets plays from Similar producers from Theo Parrish to Kenny Dixon Jr. This particular track just did it for me. The vocals.... that deep warm feeling over simple Rhodes (Keys) screams emotion. Could this be about a loved one? Sometimes the most simple tracks are so hard to create. Experiences in our daily life can create such beautiful pain resulting in great music.

Check this article on Omar S from XLR8R Magazine (2004) which digs deeper into the mysterious man from Detroit.

This is one of my favorite tracks and If you like my taste in music you already know what your in for.

MEET DETROIT'S BILEEBOB

Been into Bileebob for minute. He's definitely from another planet which you hear in his music. Always been a fan of Detroit Electronic/Techno music. To me there is no other place that does it so raw with a heavy soul influence. Always funky, usually 808s and makes you sweat.

PARTY ROCKING DETROIT STYLE MIX TAPE FROM 87

BIG UP DJ DESTROYER WHO TURNED ME ON TO THIS... JEFF MILLS IS SOUNDING REAL NICE IN THE LATE 80s COMPARED TO NOW!!! STRAIGHT PARTY ROCKING FROM ORIGINAL ELECTRO, BREAKS, FUNKY TECHNO, HIP HOP, SCRATCHING ALL IN ONE, HATS OFF TO YOU SIR

The Wizard was Techno legend Jeff Mill's DJ Moniker in the 80's and His weekend sets from that era on Detroit radio station WJLB are pretty legendary. I've been lucky enough to get my hands on one mix from '85 which is pretty ill, but this mix from '87 that someone posted on youtube is the bizness! No mp3's or tape edit machines here..just 4 technic turntables, some wax and nimble fingers. NAZZTEE!!!

ALIF TREE = MOODYMANN REMIX

ANOTHER SLEEPER...

Moodymann delivers a stellar remix here, taking the original downtempo jam and turning it into a broken jazz house cut. The theme of "Forgotten Places" is re-imagined as a tale about Detroit, a city abandoned in many ways after the 12th Street riot in 1967. Kenny Dixon himself adds vocals, shouting out streets, neighborhoods (including Black Bottom, a black neighborhood demolished in order for Interstate 75 to be constructed) and famous figures from the city of Detroit, even namechecking Buy-Rite records, the small record shop that once employed Rick Wilhite and himself and was one of the underappreciated centers of techno out on 7 Mile. A fantastic deep ode to black Detroit!

MODEL 500 - AKA JUAN ATKINS

At the dawn of the 1980s, Juan Atkins began recording what stands as perhaps the most influential body of work in the field of techno. Exploring his vision of a futuristic music which welded the more cosmic side of Parliament funk with rigid computer synth-pop embodied by Kraftwerk and the techno-futurist possibilities described by sociologist Alvin Toffler (author of The Third Wave and Future Shock), Atkins blurred his name behind aliases such as Cybotron, Model 500 and Infiniti — all, except for Cybotron, comprised solely of himself — to release many classics of sublime Detroit techno.
