THIS IS SWEATER FUNK

About Sweater Funk:

Our motto: wrong music, wrong place, wrong night...three wrongs make it right! Who in their right mind would go to Chinatown on a Sunday night, get drunk and dance to music nobody cares about? Please help us answer this question! We are a group of soul/boogie collectors and enthusiasts who've come together through the influence of our good friend Dam-Funk whose weekly Monday night at Carbon in Culver City "Funkmosphere" is our inspiration. We hope to bring the same warm vibe to our little underground Chinatown spot. We're focusing on late 70's to early 80's mid tempo soulful boogie and 2-step soul gems all on original wax. Please come down Sunday nights from 9:30pm-1:30am and introduce yourselves to our little family of bon vivants...be prepared to dance!

SWEATER FUNK STEPS TWICE :: 2011

What is Two-Step Soul?

It is style of soul music initially popularized by UK reggae djs in the mid '70s as a change of pace to the all-night reggae sound system parties. The soul tracks selected tended to be mid-tempo and was differentiated from the uptempo driving disco style popular in most clubs at the time. The key to the genre was the short shuffle, swing or pause that created a cha-cha like rhythm.

By the early '80s the name Two-Step began to stick and certain djs made it their specialty. Many soul artists from the '70s until today have songs that have become Two-Step classics but the style is more about individual songs than any particular artists. A few tracks that many view as an essential examples of Two-Step are Natalie Cole's massive hit - "This Will Be" from 1975 or Luther Ingram's - "Do You Love Somebody" from 1978. More recently, R. Kelly's - "Step In The Name Of Love" is a contemporary Two-Step track that continues to light it up and has become an anthem for the genre.

Next time you listen to a New Jack Swing or J.Dilla track, that slight pause that "hooks you" is essentially a Two-Step beat with louder snare or bass. Whether uptempo or downtempo, Steppers have been keepin' the smooth groovers going for decades and at Sweaterfunk it's no different.

At Sweaterfunk, we love sharing our Two-Step Soul with you and every MLK Jr. Holiday Weekend 'til infinity we will showcase this style all night long! Hope you can join us!

BESIDES MUSIC, KIRK IS HANDS DOWN A GOOD FRIEND. THAT MEANS MORE TO ME THEN ANYTHING. THE SELECTER KIRKS HAS SOME DEEP AND RICH KNOWLEDGE IN THE MUSIC GAME. HE HAS TAUGHT ME A FEW A THING ALONG THE WAY, WHICH IS WHY I WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU READERS..

WITH THAT BEING SAID, THE SELECTER BREAKS THE 2 STEP GENRE SO U UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE SAY, MODERN SOUL, STEPPERS, 2 STEP.

SUMMER IS IN EFFECT

San Francisco is notoriously cloudy/gloomy straight nasty during June and July. But it has been consistently cloud-free and warm. Reminds me of Southern California. Here is a summer Jam by Father's Children which is BBQ appropriate

SWEATER FUNK JULY SCHEDULE

SWEATER FUNK JULY NEWS & SCHEDULE

This has been a great experience for all of us in the Sweater Funk Family. We all look forward to seeing you guys on the dancefloor with us every Sunday, as well as hearing all the heat brought by our favorite djs who deem us worthy of a special guest appearance. Thanks a ton. We can't even begin to let you all know how much it means to us that we actually have folks to share our love of this music EVERY FREAKING WEEK! July is always a good time for a party: great weather, BBQs every weekend. This July is special for us as it's our 1 year anniversary this month. In the beginning we had doubts we would make it a year. We just wanted to see if we can get a few pals down in the basement to party and dance to our favorite tunes. Here we are a year later and we've got the makings of a great party. It's certainly my favorite one in town right now. We're celebrating with the official release of the first official Sweater Funk mix. In keeping with the slapping ourselves on the back format, we're gonna focus on the sick talent and record collections of the DJ's in our crew. Well, we do have a guest in the works but nothing is confirmed yet, we will however, keep you in the loop.

Not to discount the rest of the month, please, don't just save your dancing shoes for the anniversary gig, you gotta check these folks we have lined up for July.

July 5 - Eddy Bauer (KALX)

July 12th - Vin Sol

July 19th - DJ Sureshot (Sharpshooters)

July 26th - Sweater Funk One Year Anniversary Party w/The Sweater Funk Crew

Other Sweater Funk happings, affiliations and things we just love to do...

July 15th, 29th Sweater Funk Happy Hour @ Triple Crown

July 25th - Behind the Groove @ Koko - resident DJs Vinyl Richie, Renmin, Jon B and DJ Guillermo with guests.

Sweater Funk fully approves and supports LOST & FOUND every tuesday @ The Make Out Room. If you've ever heard us go on about "Sad Soul Night" this is what we're blabbering on about. Mellow soul 45's, cute girls slow dancing, cheap beer, tunes about screwing up love, falling in love or wondering what in the hell love is. Believe it or not this is a great place to bring that special one in your life.

word up.

SWEATER FUNK NEWS = JUNE SCHEDULE AND RELATED EVENTS

SWEATER FUNK
80's funk - boogie disco - soulful steppers
every sunday @ Li Po in china town

Once again thanks all for coming through in May, we tried hard to get a really sick line up for you and I think we did good, both last month and upcoming.

Also, the homies E Da Boss & Spinnerty of Grown Kids Radio (amongst other things) had Blunck, Proof & I by E's spot for some fried chicken, Ruffles & cream cheese, champagne and a radio interview plus dj sets! Our episode is up now on the Grown Kids Radio site for your enjoyment! Listen for shout outs, stupid anecdotes and that champagne bottle poppin'! Listen here: www.grownkidsradio.com

As some of you know we'll be celebrating Jon Blunck's birthday June 14th @ Sweater Funk, it's going to be a KILLER!!!! Special surprises to be unveiled that night @ Li Po plus some extra special guests (see below)! We'll also be moving the party to So. Cal., celebrating Dam-funk's birthday at his Funkmosphere party in L.A. the next day, so all you with the means to do so, let's head down south & rep some Bay Area Boogie in Ellay! Hope to see you there!
Be well,
-DJ Guillermo

June 7th - Sweater Funk crew with DJ Auto - Keeping it in the family this Sunday with our own adopted bro DJ Auto. We haven't run a night with just the crew in a while so this is gonna be a homecoming party long overdue.

June 14th - Jon Blunck's Sweater Blunck Birthday Boogie Bash in the Basement! Special guests: Laroj & DJ Randy Watson from the Funkmosphere crew, T.B.A., T.B.A. & DX the Funky Grandpaw dropping only LOWRIDER OLDIES at the end of the evening! Lots of Surprises in store for this evening and IT WILL BE PACKED. So arrive early and stake out your claim at the front of the dancefloor!

June 21st - Tristes Tropiques - His style in his own words: "Songs with hand claps followed by two seconds of echo, conga drums, grunts, heavily-syncopated drumming, post-punk guitars and vocals chanting, telephone rings, unexpected Jamaican or Europeans who start rapping, ironic self help advice, etc". Put that in a boogie context and it reminds me of some of the best music Sly & Robbie ever did.

June 28th - Freddy Anzures (Wax Poetics, Groove Merchant, Propr) - Journalist, DJ, Collector, visual artist and all around solid dude this one. Freddy is the man behind some of the best flyers in the game, comes with the illest records, and has been a huge supporter of not only our thing, but all deep funky music for the discerning listener. We're stoked to have him by!

Other Sweater Funk events:
June 12th - DJ GUILLERMO GUESTS W/THE HEIST CREW @ The Double Dutch - The Heist boys are: Dave Aju, Spinnerty, Dominic & Mr. Grant. They make The Double Dutch worth checking out on a Friday night (well, Mel the bartender helps a lot too). I'll be going heavy on the boogie this night while also stretching out into other funky territories. It'll all make sense on the dancefloor!

Wednesday Happy Hour @ Triple Crown - At your request we're working on making this a weekly happening. We've been getting a good response to the vibe but it sucks trying to keep track of which Wednesday we are throwing down. For now, watch your in box for updates.

Behind The Groove - 4th Saturdays @ Koko - 80's electro funk & disco - w/Renmin, Vinyl Richie, Jon Blunck & DJ Guillermo plus special guests.

DENIECE WILLIAMS

There's nothin' better that I like to do
Than sitting here cuddled up next to you
Cause you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved

It's so nice lying here in your arms
Your personality has that charm
And you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved, yea...

When I'm here with you
Are you happy too?
I can plainly see that you care... about me

Woo, I could stay here for the rest of my life,
I wanna be your lover, woman, maybe your wife
Cause you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved

It's so nice lying here in your arms
Your personality has that charm
And you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved... yea

Cause when I'm here with you
Tell me, are you happy too?
Yes, I can plainly see
That you care... You care about me

There ain't nothin', nothin' that I want to do
Than sit here baby cuddled up, cuddled up next to you
Cause you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved... yea, yea

Cause you love me baby
Just the way I want to be loved
