MUSHROOM JAZZ PARTY :: SAN FRANCISCO

The City needs this right now. Big up to Manny (M3) over at Monarch..

In 1992, Mark Farina found a welcome place for his collection of downtempo tunes accompanied by a small run of mix tapes entitled "Mushroom Jazz". Originally launched as a cassette series, the Mushroom Jazz tapes grew from the first Chicago run of 50 copies each…on to the next stage, where 500 copies of several volumes were easily distributed and sought after. As the Acid Jazz boom began, he perfected his sound and fused the newest tracks from the West Coast's jazzy, organic producers with the more urban sounds he had championed in Chicago. While the predominant musical force in SF was still dark, dubby House and Wicked-style Breaks, the city embraced the downtempo movement with a healthy bunch of live bands and DJs generating the tunes.

BOOKA SHADE

A different side from the Berlin Outfit known for creating up-tempo, dance-floor, semi techno tunes. Paper plans is a nice stoney down-tempo groover, with a wicked bass synth, along side soothing strings. I'm not really a fan of there music, but I dig this track.

REDNOSE DISTRIKT

Rednose Distrikt started out as a collaboration between two Amsterdam based artists, Kid Sublime and Steven de Peven. Kid Sublime left Rednose Distrikt and his place has since been taken by Aardvarck.

Soundwise the change in the group has had no effects, they still experiment with everything that ranges from broken-beat, off-side techno, cut-up soul or sample-slapstick-jazz.

FYI - Scumbag is a remake of Keni Burke's 'Risin' To The Top'.

MR. SCRUFF THIS FRIDAY AT MIGHTY ( SF ) DJ SET

MR. SCRUFF
Mighty: 119 Utah Street
10:00pm - 4:00am

Don't miss an exclusive Dj set with one of the most unique and eclectic producer/djs on planet Earth, the legendary Mr Scruff. Scruff will begin his set promptly at 10pm and will play all night, probably from 4-6 hours straight in a marathon of genre bending joy. In his last performance at Mighty, Scruff dropped dub, hip hop, acid jazz, drum and bass and of course his own peculiar brand of musical breakbeat. There is simply noone that quite compares to Mr Scruff for his impeccably uncompromising taste and his exceptional ability to mix the rarest vinyl flawlessly. Mr. Scruff's DJ name was inspired by his spotty facial hair, and his trademark loose-lined drawing style. He has been DJing since 1994, and is known for in marathon sets (often exceeding six hours), his eclectic musical taste, his love of a "nice cup of tea" and the quirky home-produced visuals and animations that are projected on large screens during his gigs.

Sunset is also holding an all-45's summit on the other soundsystem featuring local legends DJ ZEPH, DJ CENTIPEDE, MOTION POTION and more...

Kode9, Lee Perry, Congo Natty, King Jammy, Adrian Sherwood, U Roy, 2Many DJs, Bunny Lee, Roots Manuva, Don Letts, Mad Professor, Peter Kruder, Aba Shanti, Howie B, Adam Freeland, Sly & Robbie and many more!

This film marks both the 40th anniversary of the invention of Dub and the 20th anniversary of the death of King Tubby, the genius legend of this far-reaching musical revolution.

Three years in the making and featuring an incredible array of artists – both Jamaican legends (U Roy, King Jammy, Lee Perry, Sly and Robbie, Bunny Lee, to name a few), alongside a similarly awe-inspiring array of artists who have taken Dub into new directions in electronic dance music in the 21st Century (Kode9, Roots Manuva, Howie B, Adrian Sherwood) and many more.

DIGGING AT MOM'S HOUSE

LYRICS:

Dont look now, were branded, were the black sheep
Sewn apart and Siamese the black sheep
When the water seems too deep
The shadows always wait beneath
But laughing loud we brave the role of black sheep

If you see me youll be crossing the street
Or kick me and then leave me to bleed
If looks could kill wouldnt need all the pills
But I take what it needs to be easy we're the black
sheep now

Dont look now, were stranded here as black sheep
Swallowed whole and out of reach the black sheep
Unsafe enough for now
Were shepherded from higher ground
But drowned all out we save the role of black sheep

If you see me youll be crossing the street
Or kick me and then leave me to bleed
If looks could kill wouldnt need all the pills
But I take what it needs to be easy we're the black
sheep now

STRAIGHT CLASSIC. IF YOU EVER SEE ANY OF THERE VINYL SNAG IT UP. THIS IS TIMELESS MUSIC. I STILL LOVING PLAYING THESES RECORDS.

TOSCA NEW ALBUM OUT TODAY!!!!!

DOWNTEMPO LEGENDS ARE BACK

Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber better known as TOSCA have produced their most magical and mesmerising album yet. A luxurious tapestry of analogue and digital sounds, submerged samples and live instruments; 'No Hassle' evolves and expands into an hour-long ambient symphony. The title reflects not only the duo's laidback approach to making music but their whole philosophy of life. Check out more tracks from "Tosca"
