ADDIQUIT :: PUTTING SAN DIEGO ON THE MAP
Addiquit is an American rapper, singer and songwriter who performs as a solo MC. While you can hear the influence of hip-hop, the style seems to be emerging with something so fresh its indefinable. She's a sharp, lyrical vandal with an airy voice and street-smart beats.
The San Diego native "Addiquit" is putting her city on the map with her unique MC skills. Currently in the studio Addiquit is working on her highly anticipated debut album which should be out sometime this year. If you like Nu Disco with snazzy vocals you will dig "Take You Home".

PRESERVING THE VINYL :: PRESSING
New York Times
In an industrial and uninviting stretch of Brooklyn, near several strip clubs and a factory that makes electrical tubing, Thomas Bernich’s small plant recycles vinyl and preserves a fading piece of history.
In fact, Mr. Bernich’s workplace in Sunset Park is one of the few of its kind in New York City and in the country.
Inside the one-story, red-brick factory on 42nd Street, boxes of discarded albums from used-record stores are piled high on wooden pallets, awaiting their end and a new beginning.
The records are tossed into a large shredder to start the process of putting music on them again. The used vinyl is eventually fed into a press that creates new albums. “Taking rotten milk and breathing new life into it is not an easy thing,” Mr. Bernich said.
Mr. Bernich and the five employees at his company, Brooklynphono, have preserved the craft of applying music to vinyl.
Mr. Bernich stumbled into the record business after he realized that his talent for sculpture, which he studied at the Pratt Institute, could probably not support a career. But while at Pratt, Mr. Bernich, 40, started collecting records, inspired by a friend’s passion for vinyl.
“You have these moments when you are playing a record when you get caught in a location and time,” said Mr. Bernich, who lives in Brooklyn Heights. “There is a magic with vinyl and the memories that are connected to it.”
When he finally had the chance to buy two used vinyl-pressing machines from a plant that was closing, Mr. Bernich pounced, turning his hobby into a job and opening a small business. While vinyl records are clearly a relic, Mr. Bernich has found a niche. When it first opened in 2003, Brooklynphono was making about 2,000 records a month. Now, Brooklynphono has five pressing machines, making more than 10,000 records a month. It caters mostly to indie-rock record labels based in Brooklyn, but also to several European dance record labels.
One skill that has proved useful is the comfort with tools and machines Mr. Bernich gained while studying sculpture.
“I’m really not very musical, and the best thing I can play is the stereo,” Mr. Bernich said. “This fits because I have mechanical experience.”
He has tinkered with all his pressing machines, attaching them to a customized network of vacuum tubes and other pieces which automate the loading of vinyl plastic and the recycling of excess material and also maximize the power of the presses.
“Essentially, I’ve taken a regular machine and hot-rodded it,” Mr. Bernich said.
When the machines start up, the smell of warm plastic fills the factory. The vacuum tubes suck granules of vinyl from the industrial plastic shredder. The small plastic bits are then pumped into a hot extruder, which melts the plastic. Black vinyl flows out like toothpaste and is then formed into a misshapen puck. At that point, a label is glued on each side of the puck.
The pressing machine hisses as it opens and heats, the puck is slid onto the press, and 120 tons of pressure stamp sound waves into grooves on the vinyl. Once it cools, the flattened plastic is pushed out onto a trimmer, where any excess vinyl is cut, and the black disc is dropped onto a spindle. A record is born.
“I love how you can play a record, look at the cover art, and read the liner notes,” said Heath Bodine, 40, who does quality control at Brooklynphono. “You don’t get that with an MP3 file.”
While new vinyl plastic is still available, the material is expensive and hard to find. Mr. Bernich prefers recycled vinyl because it is suited to his retrofitted machines. “It’s like being a short-order cook,” Mr. Bernich said. “The music is only as good as the ingredients you get.”
A major responsibility for Mr. Bernich and his workers is tending to the pressing machines, which demand constant adjustment. During production, the movement of the machines causes parts to shift, and the slightest misalignment can cause a malfunction and stop production for an entire day. A disc can become jammed inside one of the machines, or the brace that holds the part that stamps grooves onto the vinyl can come loose.
Another worker, Sarah Himmelfarb, 26, wears latex gloves to test the machines and examine records. Every so often, she will stop the machines and use a small mallet to reposition the metal plates that keep the vinyl stamper in place.
Ms. Himmelfarb, who has applied to several medical schools and is waiting to hear back, compares the process of maintaining the presses to diagnosing problems in the human body. “There are symptoms, and they can be caused by a variety of things,” she said.
Zach Cale, a 32-year-old musician and a founder of All Hands Electric, an indie rock and folk music record label in Brooklyn, is one of Brooklynphono’s clients. Aside from the convenience of having records made by a local plant — his label saves on shipping costs by picking up orders — Mr. Cale prefers having his music on vinyl because, he said, fans like the tangibility of a 12-inch album. “We’ve always been really into the physicality of vinyl,” said Mr. Cale, who paid $1,300 for 500 records. “People really respond to it because it’s visual and it feels like you have a piece of the band.”
While vinyl records have largely been consigned to the dustbin of the music industry, Mr. Bernich said he still found magic in turning musicians’ ideas into physical objects to share with the world.
“Once a musician makes a record it lasts a very long time,” he said.

RAPHAEL SAADIQ
I was fortunate enough to catch Raphael Saadiq with my boo last Friday over at the Regency Ballroom SF. The show was more than I expected. Saadiq covered all his greatest hits plus a few new ones. Also worth mentioning was the band, they're off the hook! I mean OFF THE HOOK! Highlight for me was when the band played this steppers groove I never heard before while Saadiq went in for a wardrobe change. Had me wanting more.
The only let down of the night was Qaudron. I really do like this group, but for a bunch of Soul Brothers & Sisters in a BAY AREA setting the sound did not go over so well. I mean this was Saadiq's welcome home party! The restless crowed started to lose interest to the Down-Tempo style music after the first 3 songs. People were ready to get down! The Keyboard player could of at least looked like he was playing something. Not sure why he was on stage????
Over all if you have a chance to see Raphael Saadiq in concert you must. QUALITY!
THE RAH BAND :: ATJAZZ REDIT
The Original track from Rah Band always reminds me of Dam Funk. I remember meeting Damon over at Funkmosphere back in 07/08 before Funkmosphere was a big party. Damon would always drop "Messages from the stars", which is a big tune.
I personally have heard this track way to many times which is why I'm posting this nice re edit from Atjazz who did a fantastic job modernizing this tune.
Hewson founded the The RAH Band - of which he was the sole member and which took its name from his initials - in 1977 in order to release an instrumental called "The Crunch". The piece climbed to number 6 in the UK Singles Chart. Hewson played all the musical instruments himself. A number of jazz funk releases followed. The second big hit single for the RAH Band was in 1985, when the soul ballad "Clouds Across the Moon", also reached number 6 in the UK chart. This single was recorded in conjunction with his then wife, Liz, on vocals.
In July 2007, Hewson released a remixed "Clouds Across the Moon '07", now featuring vocalist Emma Charles.
The drummer on "Clouds Across The Moon" was Peter Boita. The Simmons SDS7 drums that were featured were recorded at Hewson's home studio, and plugged directly into the recording desk. Boita also played drums on other RAH Band's tracks: "Falcon", "Perfumed Garden", "Messages from the Stars", "Are You Satisfied? (Funka Nova)" and "Sorry Doesn't Make it Anymore". The RAH band's releases were issued under a variety of record labels, including Good Earth Records, DJM, KR Records, TMT Records and RCA.

...
Soundway set sail for the Colombian coastal town of Cartagena for their first selection of 2011. Sourced from a period when musicians effortlessly combined the swing of cumbia with the driving bass of salsa, Cartagena! un-wraps a period of musical history seldom heard beyond the tropical coast of South America.
Compiled by Roberto 'Beto' Gyemant with the help of Colombian resident Will ‘Quantic’ Holland and Miles Cleret, Cartagena! focuses on the extraordinary life and career of Curro Fuentes, the youngest brother of the family responsible for the Discos Fuentes label.
Cartagena! features 19 tracks and is presented on CD and double gatefold LP, designed by Lewis Heriz. Both CD and LP include detailed liner notes and offer insights from Will Holland’s interview with the late Curro Fuentes.

THANK YOU LCD SOUNDSYSTEM
If you have 3 hours to spare, check out the concert in full below.
When LCD Soundsystem announced their final gig at New York's Madison Square Garden, tickets sold out in just 15 seconds.
Would-be concert-goers erupted in hysterical rage when touts began selling tickets priced as high as $1,500 (£930). The band's front man James Murphy tweeted: "NO MATTER WHAT WE DO, IT IS NOT WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY TO SEE US!"
Evidently some 14,000 people thought it was. The atmosphere in the stadium on Saturday night was somewhere between joyous wake and dance party funeral – as the band announced on their website: "If it's a funeral, let's have the best funeral ever!!!" The stands were filled with people known as the hipsters, many were dressed in Murphy's trademark look (black suit, white shirt, skinny black tie), and all had come to pay their respects to the band that Esquire magazine described as "arguably the most influential indie band of the past five years."
From their breakout 2002 single, Losing My Edge, LCD Soundsystem have offered a unique combination of geek knowledge, passion and intelligent, ironic distance. The ultimate hipster band, they are calling it quits just as the decade of the hipster seems to be coming to an end. American Apparel is facing bankruptcy and the market is awash with Tumblr-to-book titles like Stuff Hipsters Hate and Look At This Fucking Hipster. Brooklyn literary magazine n+1 recently proclaimed: "Hipsters are not dead, they still breathe, they live on my block. Yet it is evident that we have reached the end of an epoch of the type."
Murphy himself was never really a hipster. For nearly a decade, Murphy – at 41, at least a good decade older than the crowd on Saturday night – stood as a self-mocking totem to a certain kind of experience. Losing My Edge was an anthem for the aging music nerd, with lyrics detailing a comically epic list of historical dates, bands and attended gigs: the anti-hipster's defence against "the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties". Unlike some of the output of those art-school Brooklynites, which has tended to espouse a tone of context free apathy, Murphy has always been interested in creating a record of the times.
And as if to prove he's still one step ahead, Murphy is now bowing out. The three-and-a-half-hour concert included a guest appearance by Arcade Fire, who sang back-up on North American Scum, prompting chants of 'North American! North American!' – as close as a hipster can get to shouting "USA! USA!". And Murphy closed with the unabashedly elegiac New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down, a mournful chronicle of New York's post-Giuliani transformation.
CHK CHK CHK
Another kick ass band, with incredible live show. I've been into the Boys from Sacramento for awhile who bring a modern take on the Chili Peppers of old. (My opinion) Chk Chk Chk is sure to deliver Party Funk and High Energy dance tunes all night...
I'm very excited to announce "Chk Chk Chk" will be playing in SF April 19th. I look forward to the dance friendly show.
