GREGORY BOJORQUEZ :: .45 POINT BLANK
HardHitta Gallerey
Photographer Gregory Bojorquez, whose previous one man shows featuring life in East Los Angeles has won the praise of critics and art lovers all over the world, will unveil a dramatic five picture series of a recent real-life shootout on the streets of Hollywood in a one man show scheduled for June 9th in Los Angeles. Presented by Bene Taschen through his pop-up art space, Hardhitta Gallery (5900 Wilshire Blvd, East Annex (Variety Building), Los Angeles, CA 90036), “.45 Point Blank” will open on June 9th and run through July 12th.
Taschen, the son of art publisher Benedikt Taschen, has long been a supporter of Bojorquez and recently featured a collection of the photographer’s work entitled “Streets of L.A.” in Hardhitta exhibitions in Cologne and Berlin. Of those shows, Carolin Genreith writing for Germany’s HHV magazine said, “Bojorquez’ photos are poetic, sometimes merciless. Some seem almost staged or from another time, but what is to be discovered in the exhibition “Streets of L.A.” is the dark and real, here and now (hidden) under a bright Californian sky.”
A native of East Los Angeles, Bojorquez cut his teeth shooting for the local alternative newspaper, L.A. Weekly. He also made a name for himself amongst the city’s celebrity set with his unique approach to shooting hip hop icons and sports stars. But his personal work was always a priority – Bojorquez never went anywhere without his camera and in 2009 his work was featured in a collection called “The Sun Rises in the East” at the downtown Los Angeles art gallery 01.
In December of 2011 while walking on Sunset Blvd, near the intersection of Vine Street, Bojorquez was literally caught in the crossfire of a dramatic shoot out between a lone gunman and LAPD. As Bojorquez instinctively snapped pictures, police shot the gunman dead in the street. One innocent bystander was also shot and later died in the hospital. Bojorquez’ photographs were carried by hundreds of newspapers around the world, but have never before been available to view as a sequence of fine art prints.
This series of photographs form the backbone of “.45 Point Blank,” which is a retrospective of Bojorquez work beginning in 1992 through 2011. The gritty, street-level work features the kind of grimy glamour that is Bojorquez’ calling card. From Boyle Heights to Beverly Hills, Bojorquez ability to capture the essence of such a disparate group of subcultures signals a major photographic tour de force.
Gregory Bojorquez:
Born in 1972, grew up in the infamous streets of East Los Angeles. He photographed his surroundings, his neighbors and his friends, succeeding early on in documenting their private lives. After he caught the attention of LA Weekly, he began to photograph Hollywood celebrities, stars ranging from the likes of Snoop Dogg to Mike Tyson. His photos were published in numerous magazines including Rolling Stone Magazine and FHM.
However he continues to go back to his roots by maintaining his interest in people from his surroundings. He knows the dark side of Los Angeles and conveys original images of a hidden world, far removed from the Hollywood Hills. His photos have a remarkable documentary quality, for example “The Eastsiders” (1997-2001), a fascinating work of romance, gangs and death. “Friday Night Party” shows 19 year old ‘Wicked’ with his friends just minutes before his murder by a member of a rival gang.
Greg paints a picture of Los Angeles as we have never seen it before – naked and uncensored.

SUPER iam8bit :: VIDEO GAMES & ART :: ECHO PARK

My work was fortunate to be involved with iam8bit, who recently had a show in Los Angeles.
The line stretched down the block on Thursday, August 11, for the opening of "SUPER iam8bit" at iam8bit world headquarters in Echo Park. Hundred of international artists participated in the show, which featured a gigantic Galaga game and an interactive Kinect hack.
iam8bit founder Jon Gibson says the opening of the new Super iam8bit art show in Los Angeles' Echo Park neighborhood this week is really about a "rebirth." Iam8bit is not only premiering over 100 new pieces by artists inspired by old-school video games, but it's also showing off a brand new gallery space, and reinventing itself as a company.
"It was just me before, by my lonesome for so many years," says Gibson. "And now I have three partners and we're all equal, and we're all taking charge." Taylor Harrington, Amanda White, and Nick Ahrens have now officially joined the company, and the group will all work together on the art collective's various projects.
The new space will be helpful as well -- iam8bit originally found it while putting an event together with Capcom, and eventually leased it themselves. Gibson plans to use it for a number of different functions. "It's so big," he says. "We can do shows here, we can have concerts, we can do movie screenings."
The Super iam8bit show has a book associated with it, currently available in the gallery's storefront, open for business Thursdays through Saturdays in LA. And the art show itself is open for the next month

RICO DENIRO :: FIFTY24SF

Rico Deniro’s new exhibition, Native Expatriots is opening tomorrow at our FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco.
For the show, Rico has presented people that live outside of technologically based civilizations in the rural villages of Mexico with images of first-world pop culture icons and employed them with one task: to interpret those icons in a traditional Mexican wooden mask. The craftsmen of these masks have no reference point to these images, no sense of importance tied to the celebrities that they were given, no inundation of cultural significance by media sources – and instead translate the images into form at a completely superficial and innocent level.
The resulting masks show these idols at a level which we rarely see them: exposed. Not in the way that the news media ‘exposes’ celebrities, because in that case there’s a symbiotic dependency – but in the way that these idols are exposed for their lack of substance other than the media and marketing that convinces us of their substance.
The masks created in Mexico will be on display at FIFTY24SF Gallery at 218 Fillmore Street, San Francisco from January 6th, 2011 – January 26th, 2011.

BARRY MC GEE & CLARE ROJAS

Here’s a local fun fact about Bolinas, California: the town is secluded, intentionally kept a small and tight community known for taking down any signs leading off the highway to its location, and kept pretty much exactly as it was thirty years ago. Sounds like the perfect location for art couple Barry McGee and Clare Rojas to exhibit their work together.
With this announcement, the San Francisco Bay Area based artists Barry McGee and Clare Rojas are doing something they haven’t done together in a long time: exhibit their art in an exhibition side by side. Coming up Saturday, June 19th, 2010 the duo will show off their wildly influential works at the Bolinas Museum.

Barry McGee aka Twist, has been a major player in the San Francisco art scene for the past two decades. McGee rose out of the Mission School art movement and graffiti boom of the 90s and creates iconic works exploring urban life and social ills in our modern world.
Clare Rojas’ works depict women, men, nature and animals as strong and weak, caring and connected to one another in their struggle to find harmony and balance.
Both artists are known to shy away from media and the public eye, so the Bolinas setting should be an ideal habitat in which to unveil this important exhibit.

Barry McGee’s work is on display now as part of the SF MoMA’s 75th Anniversary exhibit.

PARK LIFE - ART SHOW = SF

Bro Palace is the title of our upcoming art show featuring the work of Skinner, Porous Walker, Jay Howell, Deth P Sun and Ferris Plock. Although their work is mostly rooted in illustration, each artist has a very distinct and instantly recognizable style. From psychedelic mash-ups to ink drawings to sculpture this show promises to tickle the artistic fancy of a wide viewing audience. To further add a touch of mayhem, the SF based band Thee Oh Sees will be playing a special set during the night of the reception. This show is not to be missed, bro.
Artist Bio:
Skinner - is an obsessive painter / illustrator who collects animals and friends while envisioning the end of all humans in his psychedelic nightmare paintings too hideous to behold.
Porous Walker - is somebody.
Porous draws, paints, writes, sculpts, acts, films, photos, fashion designs and anything else it takes to get his vision across. Porous has shown works all around the globe and even in fancy places like the NY MOMA. His works have been featured in major motion pictures and television.
Porous Walker has been officially selected by himself to waste hours
of your time with his crap.
Jay Howell - is an all around kind dude that draws funny-ass cartoons and stuff. He lives in San Francisco where he can be seen on the streets messin’ around and sayin’ classic shit on a regular basis.
Deth P. - Sun is a painter/illustrator currently residing in Berkeley, California. He is originally from San Diego, California, and moved up to the Bay Area for schooling. He received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002 in Painting and Drawing.
Ferris Plock - is an artist who currently enjoys drawing tacos fighting burgers in a battle for fast food supremacy. He can be found roaming the beautiful streets of Western Addition with his wife and his son. He has been creating his art for a few years now and hopes to continue to do so in the near and distant future. He is very excited to be working with the likes of Deth, Jay, Porous, and Skinner.

Giant Robot is proud to celebrate the release of Dolltopia with a signing by writer and artist AbbyDenson.
A natural follow-up to Denson's critically acclaimed, self-published, yaoi-influenced comic zine about high-school love, Tough Love (which became a Lulu Award-winning anthology in 2007), Dolltopia is a highly stylized depiction of dolls trying to bust out of the stereotypical boxes that they are packaged in. Will the protagonists, who resemble Barbie and G.I. Joe, liberate themselves from their suburban and he-man trappings? The art is disarmingly simple and the raw storytelling has the rare quality of being able to tap into a reader's recollections of youthful confusion and feel genuine to young people themselves.
In addition to Denson signing copies of her work, there will be cupcakes and a doll makeover contest. Whoever brings the best made-over doll will receive a signed copy of Dolltopia!
Denson will be signing the long-awaited graphic novel from 6:00 to 8:00 on Saturday, November 7th. For more information about the author, GRSF, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:
