R.I.P LADY "T"

Teena Marie, a celebrated R&B singer-songwriter, was found dead Sunday at her California home, her manager said.

Born Mary Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California, the 54-year-old artist famously paired with late funk legend Rick James and was nominated four times for a Grammy Award, according to her official website.

Marie was found dead by her daughter after apparently dying in her sleep, manager Mike Gardner said.

"Teena was a black voice trapped in a white body," said Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, a broadcasting company that targets African-American and urban listeners. "I would always tell her that she was one of the greatest vocalists of our time."

Among her songs were "Lovergirl," "Portuguese Love," "Ooo La La La," and "I'm a Sucker for Your Love."

While no cause of death has been released, the singer's publicist Lynn Jeter said that Marie suffered a grand mal seizure -- a neurological event, marked by loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions, according to the Mayo Clinic -- a month ago.

"Luckily, someone was there," Jeter said of that seizure. "The ambulance took her to the hospital, and on the way she had another seizure."

The publicist said that she had a "great" conversation on Saturday with Marie, who told her that she was excited about heading to Atlanta to perform this week -- in what would have been her first performance since the seizure.

Marie sang under various record labels, including Motown, Epic, Stax Records and Cash Money Classics, since bursting on the scene as a 19-year-old, according to her website. Her last studio album, Congo Square, featured several collaborations.

Eddie Levert, founder of the vocal group The O'Jays, praised Marie as both a singer and mother.

"There are a lot of black people who swore by her and believed in her, as far as her music was concerned," he said. "She was a good mom, and to me, that is saying a lot.''

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

All for under $20 bucks.

TOKYO DAWN RECORDS :: THE BOOGIE

Based on groove fundamentals such as 80's and 90's R&B, Minneapolis funk and early electro, this compilation holds 18 modern approaches.

Combining neon synths and soul chords with a decent portion of future funk, we're invited to ride an exciting new wave of artists combining latest production techniques with classic grooves deeply rooted in 80's sounds wonderland.

Finely collected by TDR conductor Marc Wallowy, this amazing compilation features 74 minutes of dirty g-funk bangers, sweaty robot grooves, cosmic p-funk bombs and anthems of intergalatic existentialism. 'The Boogie' also features appetizers from forthcoming albums by Amalia, Blaktroniks, Replife, Soulparlor, Vindahl and others dropping 2011 via TDR. Connecting the dots between electro, rap, house and R&B, this exclusive outlook is equally recommended for fans of funk past, present and future!

QUINCY JONES :: SOUL BOSSA NOSTRA

Finally had a chance to check out Quincy Jones latest album Soul Bossa Nostra. The name may be deceiving and for myself I'm not that impressed. I can see the musical direction in which Quincy Jones was heading, not to mention the all star cast.

After a few listen One track stood out. "Betch Wouldnt hurt me" feat, Mary J, Q-Tip, Alfredo Rodriquez. This one right here stood out among a see of POP infiltrated type songs... Heavy Modern 80s soul vibe, which I'm all about.

Patti Austin did the original track back in 1980 "The Dude" written by Stevie Wonder sung by Grammy Winner of 2008 Best Jazz Vocal Patti Austin. She is doing all the background vocals on three of her four tracks from The Dude album.

HOT POCKET :: S.O.S BAND HIGH HOPES COVER

Bay Area's "Roots" - Hot Pocket is the rhythm section for Bayonics. They have performed as a backing band for many notable artists such as: Eric Roberson, Jaguar Wright, Lady Alma, Yahzarah, China Blac, and Big Brooklyn Red.

I was so happy to hear Hot Pocket covering S.O.S Bands - High Hopes live last Saturday evening. I believe it was the second or third song in there set. Hot Pocket sounded amazing, plus the crowd went crazy once those Key Synths set in.

GROOVE MERCHANT TURNS 20 :: VINYL RECORD SHOP (SF)

In an era where most people acquire their music online, it is a testament to word of mouth, hard work, and a sense of communal goodwill that Groove Merchant, a small boutique record store located in the Lower Haight district of San Francisco has just reached its 20 year anniversary. The folks at Groove Merchant are celebrating this benchmark by releasing a new compilation entitled Groove Merchant Turns 20: 14 Selections behind the Counter. It is a fine selection of modern soul, psychedelic folk, left field disco, and jazzy funk curated by owner and record maestro Cool Chris.

Living in a post-analog music world has had some serious consequences on the livelihood of musicians, producers, and the infrastructure that supports such artists. There has been much documentation on the death of the music industry over the last few years with most of the hand-wringing and eulogizing focused on the money paid to musicians and labels. But one aspect of the puzzle that often gets overlooked is the distribution on the ground floor. As Wal-Mart and Best Buy continue to make record profits on the sale of music titles, the independent local record store flounders and struggles to survive. Chris notes, “In the last 16 years behind the counter at Groove Merchant, I have witnessed no less than 25 independent Bay Area record shops permanently close their doors.” A sad state of affairs, indeed. This is an especially poignant indictment considering that the Bay Area prides itself on resisting corporate market economics to drive out local businesses. Yet, even progressive San Francisco has not been able to evade the realities that the encroachment of digital media has wrought upon the local business owner.

However, Groove Merchant has been a veritable story of David over Goliath; how a small record store continues to thrive in spite of the crushing odds. The key to their success stems not only from the basic principles behind running a successful shop: quality varied stock, reasonable prices, and a good ear; but also from the personalities behind the counter. How many times have you walked into a record store only to encounter a caricature of Jack Black from High Fidelity; that crusty old nerd who is intent on making a mockery out of your ineptitude and lack of knowledge? Or even worse the brusque and indifferent record store clerk who seems to make a career out of not hearing your concerns as he absentmindedly shuffles around the store. If you have walked into a record store in the last 10 years I am sure you have encountered such crabbiness. Which is why it’s so refreshing to spend time at the Groove Merchant, a place that creates a certain vibe as soon as you step in the door. This is in large part due to Cool Chris and staff being at the helm; they have defined the ethos of the Merchant through their laid back, warm and knowledgeable presence.

The Groove Merchant store was opened in 1990 by Michael McFadin, and quickly became the go-to place for finding rare soul, funk, jazz and latin music. Since the 90s were an era in which hip-hop producers were on the hunt to find breaks for sampling purposes, the Merchant came to be an important purveyor of those titles that would end up having a major influence on hip-hop culture. In fact, the Beastie Boys name checked McFadin on Check Your Head: “This one goes out to my man, the Groove Merchant, coming through with beats for which I’ve been searching.” Since Groove Merchant was originally a store that McFadin opened as he was starting Ubiquity Records, the tastes of Ubiquity, Luv N’ Haight and CuBop ran parallel to the tastes of the shop. Funky soul jazz, hard funk, and deep latin grooves.

CHRISTMAS AT SEDSOUL :: BEST HOLIDAY COMP EVER!

FINALLY A MODERN SOUL CHRISTMAS ALBUM (add to you favorite pile of Holiday music)

Just in time because my folks love soul music and I'm home for the Holidays. I just placed my order for this AMAZING CD titled "Christmas Time" At SedSoul. WOOOOOOT!!!

All your parents favorite Holiday anthems replaced with Bass Synths, Soul Claps, and even a touch of Gospel for the inner Grown Folk. Of course you can download this album, but I picked up a Hard Copy for the Physical Aspect. Call me Old school.

Check out all the tracks on SedSoul and pick up this album!

SedSoul Records have given us so much fantastic music over recent years, and now it's time for their latest release which, as usual, takes everything great and good about soul music AND this time also draws upon all that we cherish about the festive season to make a very special album of festive and celebratory songs. Rob Hardt at Sedsoul Records has all the elements of a truly successful and popular Christmas album that does not fall into the trap of being sugary, schmaltzy or gimmicky. With his "Christmas At Sedsoul" we are treated to soulful music which is melodic, relaxed and luxuriant, as well as other songs that are joyous uptempo numbers which will put a smile on your face, a spring in your step and create the right atmosphere for the festive season. Soulful Christmas albums have never been given serious consideration before, but this album certainly merits serious, critical attention. When Eugene Wilde sings about Christmas on "I Love Christmas", he puts his heart and soul into this, and the lyrics support the whole ethos of the album. Sharing the good times, laughing, enjoying family and appreciating all that is good are what we're talking about. SedSoul has always incorporated the best of the past into their music, and this is no different and a nod goes to the past masters of the Christmas song when Nat King Cole is referenced.
