INCOGNITO :: SURREAL
This is why I do HTS blog. I like to share music that might of slipped through the cracks, or turning you on to something new.
This album in particular being from Incognito, "Surreal". Grown folk music right here. Support the artist. It's time to start returning the favor, and spend a dollar for a digital copy.
Incognito is recognized as one of the best Funk/Jazz/Soul outfits in the world, a pioneer of the Acid Jazz movement who has delighted listeners and dancers for decades, scoring hits with versions of Stevie wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" and Ronnie Laws' "Always There", selling more than a million records in the process.
Surreal is Incognito's look into the future, featuring two of the brightest young stars on the British Soul scene, Mo Brandis, who is being hailed as England's John Legend, and soul diva Natalie Williams of whom Time Out writes "One of the UK's hottest singers. She effortlessly moves from soul diva to sensual and sophisticated jazz." Long time Incognito lead singer, the incomparable Maysa, is also featured on this brilliant set of 12 Bluey Maunick originals.

GATO BARBIERI :: LATIN JAZZ FUNK

By the late 1970s Gato was recording for A&M and moved his music towards Jazz-Pop, Jazz Funk with albums like "Caliente!" (featuring his best known song, a version of Carlos Santana's "Europa") and "Tropico".
Though he continued to record and perform into the 1980s, the death of his wife Michelle led him to withdraw from the public. He returned to recording and performing in the late 1990s, playing music that would fall into the arena of smooth jazz.

WEBSTER LEWIS

This tune is from Webster Lewis's 8 For The 80's album (1979)
The man has a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, yet Webster Lewis's best known recordings are his mid/late 70's disco tunes. In my opinion, he is a terrific pianist/keyboardist who should have been able to establish himself in the Jazz genre. Instead he worked in the background in various positions.
The most notable musician he's worked with are Barry White, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, and Herbie Hancock, to name a few.

JUMP STREET BAND

Finally had a chance to record this one. I went through a pile of records the other day and pulled my "Jump Street Band"- "The Groove" a Jazz Funk number from this 9 Piece band out of Philly. Although the album is not for the dance floor, the mature listener while appreciate the sounds. You know I love my Jazz Funk...

GEORGE BENSON

ONE OF MY FAVORITE JAZZ, FUNK, SOUL GUITARIST OF OUR TIME. OFTEN OVER LOOKED, AND KNOWN FOR HIS AWARD WINNING TRACK GIVE ME THE NIGHT. THAT SONG REALLY PUT HIM ON THE MAP TO A BROADER AUDIENCE, BUT THERE IS A DEEPER SIDE.

JAZZ FUNK

This is the second album by the Crusaders' saxophonist Wilton Felder, released in 1980 on MCA Records and produced by the Crusaders. Most notable guest artist is Bobby Womack who sings the great title track, while the other musicians include Dean Parks, Arthur Adams, Roland Bautista, Joe Sample, Abraham Laboriel, Ndugu Chancler, Ricky Lawson and Paulinho Da Costa.

ROBSON JORGE & LINCOLN OLIVETTINO

This album hit really hard at Jazz Radio Stations and Discos from 1982 to 1986-1987 because of its superb fusion of Jazz-Funk-Soul with their huge Brazilian twists, making this one, one of those "Old and Forgotten Brazilian" albums that DJs in England and Japan dig so much, but because of whatever bizarre reason, they haven't found this one yet, and they're still missing out BIG TIME.
This great album's sounds, share the same Brazilian Jazz structures of the era; sounds like Azymuth, like Banda Black Rio, like Eumir Deodato like Jorge Ben (actually in my personal opinion I consider this album waaay better and funkier than Africa Brasil by Jorge Ben).
Lincoln was at that time a highly sought-after producer, keyboardist and arranger for pretty much everybody in Brasil, from MPB artists to Brazilian Jazz; some highlight names he worked with, include: Emilio Santiago, Gilberto Gil, Marina Lima and hundreds more; and this, his album in joint-venture with virtuoso Guitarist-Bassits Robson Jorge could not be any different; full of Funk, full of wonderful arrangements, full of multiple-recording (dubbing), full of Soul and plenty of immagination.
