DAM-FUNK AND STEVE ARRINGTON LP = 2010

Stones Throw head honcho Chris Manak, a.k.a. Peanut Butter Wolf, has just confirmed that Leimert Park funkernaut Dâm-Funk is working on two collaborative records to be due out some time in 2010. Giving further gravitas to the rising artist's credo, "Funk is not a fad... It's a way of life," Dâm will be reaching into his native genre's colorful past to bring the former singer of Ohio funk band Slave, Steve Arrington, back into the realm of secular music. As if that weren't enough, Dâm and Stones Throw have begun talks with L.A.'s own Nite Jewel in order schedule recording for an upcoming joint LP. In the word of the late, great, godfather of soul, "Good God!"

Before we go on, here's a little refresher on Slave.

The Wolf weighs in on the backstory after the jump.

According to Manak, Dâm (real name Damon Riddick) and Arrington have five or six songs in the bag, with "all of the instrumentals coming from Damon, and Steve writing his own vocal melodies and lyrics. It's fifty-fifty."

Fittingly, it was a love for Slave that brought Dâm to Stones Throw in the first place.

"When I first talked to Damon, we bonded over an appreciation for Slave," said Manak. "He told me that he had video of Steve Arrington performing in the early '80s, and I'd never seen live footage, so I was excited to check it out. When Dâm and I met [in person], he gave me a copy of the DVD, and I thought, 'I've gotta stay in contact with this guy.'"

Though Manak said he had his doubts about Arrington's willingness to collaborate when Dâm broached the topic -- Arrington left funk for the ministry in 1990 after experiencing a religious conversion -- emails were exchanged and the former Slave singer was apparently wooed by Dâm's take on the medium. A release date is still pending.

As for Nite Jewel's Ramona Gonzales, she and Dâm recently made a "Tune In An Afternoon" for XLR8R TV but until today, no news of any further output from "Nite Funk" had emerged. While recording hasn't yet begun -- both have been spending a lot of time out on the road -- Manak said they all "sat down for dinner" last week to figure out a schedule. And here, not that you need it, is a refresher on Nite Jewel.

The impetus for WCS' call to Stones Throw came with this release from the label a couple of days ago, accompanying the leak of a brand new Dâm-Funk track:

"Besides putting together the forthcoming STEVE ARRINGTON (Formerly of SLAVE) LP for Stones Throw as well as collaborations with NITE JEWEL, production for JODY WATLEY, various remixes for XX & the Hyperdub label, Exclusive Mix CD's for 101 Apparel, forthcoming collaborations w/ JOKER + traveling all around the world w/ the 'Modern-Funk' sound in tow...this is the newness that D-F has been up to 'so far' in 2010"

You can download said "newness" below. As for the work with former Shalamar singer (and Soul Train dancer) Jody Watley, Manak said he thinks Dâm's only produced a track or two for her. He also mentioned that Monsieur Funk just wrapped up some studio time with Raphael Saadiq, so we've got that to look forward to as well.

ALIF TREE = MOODYMANN REMIX

ANOTHER SLEEPER...

Moodymann delivers a stellar remix here, taking the original downtempo jam and turning it into a broken jazz house cut. The theme of "Forgotten Places" is re-imagined as a tale about Detroit, a city abandoned in many ways after the 12th Street riot in 1967. Kenny Dixon himself adds vocals, shouting out streets, neighborhoods (including Black Bottom, a black neighborhood demolished in order for Interstate 75 to be constructed) and famous figures from the city of Detroit, even namechecking Buy-Rite records, the small record shop that once employed Rick Wilhite and himself and was one of the underappreciated centers of techno out on 7 Mile. A fantastic deep ode to black Detroit!

SUNDAY MODERN SOUL

From Los Angeles, Zoom were signed to Polydor Records in 1981 and were taken under the wing of session drummer James Gadson (who was a former member of a Kansas City group called the Carpets). Nolan Semien, the lead singer, was a local vocalist, singing at bars before joining the group. That year the band released an album on Polydor entitled 'Saturday, Saturday Night. The album has, since it's release, become highly sought after for the rare groove ballad 'Love Seasons', with it's unusual synthesiser noises by session musician Wayne Stallings.

James Gadson had Wayne Stallings, on the synthesiser, hit the same note that Nolan Semien hit for that high note he held, following which he had the synthesiser trailoff the note to make the listener believe Nolan held it longer and higher.

OSUNLADE

2006 SLEEPER

This is usually grouped into the house music section, and even though the feeling of house is present (positive vibe, makes you wanna move) only a few of the tracks are straight house. Many are much closer to jazz. Latin and African influences are present on the percussion, as well as the aforementioned house. Throw in some synths, woodwinds, and a string section, and you should get as close of an idea as you can without actually hearing it.

That having been said, check it out. A solid album, and is probably going to be a little underrated and overlooked in contrast to the actual worth of the recording.

OSUNLADE - OIA IN WINTER

D'NELL

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG... STILL GREAT, I RECORDED THIS THE OTHER DAY. I WAS DIGGING IN THE CRATE FOUND THIS RECORDS. I HEADED OVER TOWARDS THE RIPPING MACHINE PRESSED RECORD, WENT ON THE FIRE ESCAPE AND ENJOYED THE VIEW WITH A NICE PHATTY. EXHALED....

WILL BE HEARD AT SOUL; ITS THE REAL THING (COMING SOON)

D’nell is producer Dan Jones and singer Ellie Hajee. 1st Magic is their first full length, recorded entirely in the confines of their studio apartment in London UK. Such endeavors are usually relegated to house and techno producers, but D’Nell have created a spacious and soulful offering perfect for BBE’s brand of real music intended for real folks.

1st Magic focuses D’nell’s interest in fusing the rough with the smooth. By combining Dan’s grainy production, Hip Hop beats and an obsession with obscure equipment and records with Ellie’s distinct soulful vocal and biographical lyrics, D’nell have bought us an insight into the bedroom in which they live and record, whether it’s making beats or making love.

MAYBE IM WEIRD

NOT ALL TRACKS ARE MENT FOR THE DANCE FLOOR. IN THIS CASE, DABRYE HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE IDM, GLITCHY, HIP HOP PRODUCER FOR A LONG TIME. I RECORDED DABRYE REMIX ALBUM CALLED - (Additional Productions Vol. 1) WHICH CAME OUT IN 2005. IM SHARING 2 OF MY FAVORITE CUTS FROM THAT ALBUM

Dabrye is an alias of Ann Arbor, Michigan-based musician Tadd Mullinix (also known as James T. Cotton, SK-1), whose Winking Makes A Face was the first album released by Ann Arbor’s Ghostly International.

Parting with the IDM sound of Winking..., the first Dabrye album was 2001's One/Three, whose take on instrumental hip-hop paralleled the work of artists such as Prefuse 73. Successive Dabrye projects included 2004's Game Over single, which featured MC work by Jay Dee and Phat Kat – the single was a precursor to the second Dabrye full-length Two/Three, which includes other notable underground figures like MF DOOM, Beans, Vast Aire, and Big Tone, and features art by France's WK Interact. Mullinix’s work as Dabrye has been met with acclaim for its signature rhythmic sensibilities, which fuse the feel of live drumming with stylized electronic programming.

THANKS TO MY FRIENDS OVER AT NACIONAL RECORDS WHO LACED ME UP ON THIS OUTFIT.

Plastilina Mosh is a Mexican alternative rock group from Monterrey, México. Jonás is the lead singer and guitar player. Alejandro Rosso is more involved with the creative process, providing most of the instrumentation and occasional background vocals.

As of 2008 they have released four studio records. The band has achieved, since the release of their 1997 single-debut 'Niño Bomba', both critical and commercial success. The group often mixes several music styles like rap, dance and rock while often switching between English, Spanish and several other languages in the same song.

Compiled by Beto, Quantic and Miles Cleret, Panama! 3 showcases more of the unique tropical music created in Panama in the fertile decades of the 1960s and ’70s. From bilingual calypsos to guajira jazz, from tropical guarachas to cumbia tamboreras, Panamanian musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment during a turbulent time in the young country’s history. This collection presents more of the golden age of Panamanian music and the music of the combos nacionales on rare recordings that have never been released outside the isthmus until now.
