LYRICS BORN LOVES SWEATER FUNK

Taken from SF Weekly:

Sweater Funk's irresistibly smooth '80s boogie is catching on. The new video, "Coulda Shoulda Woulda," from the Bay Area's Lyrics Born, features the same kind of funky grooves that dominate that DJ night.

The video certainly has its charms, with the warm colors, '80s film fuzz, and cartoon faces, but what sells it most is the song itself: the impeccably smooth boogie swagger of the band, with its fat, but precise bass, pointed horn accents, and singalong choruses, complemented by Lyrics Born singing, rapping, and doing that singsong half-rap thing he's so good at.

"Coulda Shoulda Woulda" is from Lyrics Born's 2010 release As U Were. The video premiered on May 23rd.

BLOODS & CRIPS :: BANGING ON WAX

I think I still have the cassette tape at my parents house. I remember my folks flipping out owhen they saw the cover. Fuck it!

The Bloods & Crips project was organized by producer Ronnie Phillips and rapper Tweedy Bird Loc, who is a Kelly Park Compton Crip himself.[1] Actual gang members, Crips from Compton and Long Beach, Bloods from Inglewood and Los Angeles[1] auditioned for the group and the best ones were chosen for the album.[2] In 1993 the Bloods & Crips released their debut album entitled Bangin' on Wax for Warlock Records. One year later, the groups second and final studio album, Bangin' on Wax 2... The Saga Continues was released. After Bangin' on Wax 2, the Bloods & Crips parted ways, with the Bloods becoming the Damu Ridas and the Crips became the Nationwide Rip Ridaz.

The idea behind the albums was to get the gang members to bang (slang for fight) on wax (i.e., record) and not in the streets. Each record consisted of a "B" side and a "C" side. The B side consisted of Bloods and the C side consisted of Crips. The song "Bangin On Wax" was the only song where the Bloods & Crips rapped together in the original album. Most of the songs were written and recorded in the same studio session.

WE LOVE ARNOLD

Just had a Arnold moment with my boy. Seriously, I'm a huge fan of Schwarzenegger films, especially his early career. I found a youtube clip which breaks down all of Arnold's best quotes. If you have 10 minutes to spare, your in for a good laugh. You wont be disappointed. Comedy!

HAIGHT & SOUL :: HOMEBOY MADS B-DAY :: ALRATO "GYPSY" PARTY

I had a great time last Friday for the Homeboy Mads Birthday / Gypsy's going away party over at "Haight & Soul". Don't let the rough exterior fool you, The Souleros are some of the nicest people around. Nothing but good times when kicking it with the Soul Familia. Check pictures captured through out the night!

Enjoy

TIGER & WOODS

Now that every one is a Disco/Funk expert, the flood of new music and people sampling 80s funk records makes me sad, we don't need intro's and edits that suck! In a sea of horrible production I can honestly say there are a few groups who can do the sound right.

Tiger & Woods is a duo out of KY who are under the radar at the moment, but we expect to hear more from these cats real soon as they're making big noise in the underground music scene. Right now you can pick up the latest release "Caddy Shag EP" Vinyl or Digital where good music is sold.

Don't sleep...

THE PENDLETONS

New release from our boys "The Pendletons" This one is different from their previous release, with more of a electronic feel. On some next level funk ish. Please support and tell a friend.

VINCENTE FERNANDEZ :: REWORKED

This song brings back memories for as a youth. My grandma would always play Vincente, especially when she was cooking. At family gathering my Grandparents would always sing songs from Vincente Fernandez catalogue of music, as he was the "Elvis" of Mariachi music. Great rework "Goldenchyld".

THE COOKIE CREW

What a great turn out last night at Sweater Funk. The Knockout Room is perfect in many ways. I'm really feeling the atmosphere and sound system, not to mention the space. I would be more than happy to play here Sundays while Lipo is under construction.

Special shout to the Home girls Melissa & Daniela aka "The Cookie Crew", our guest who've blown away some of our previous guest record collection out of the water in my eyes... These girls are such sweet hearts, and it shows in there selection. Take notes fellas, "The Cookie Crew" ain't playing.

BRIAN & EDWARD HOLLAND :: LAMONT DOZIER

This one never leaves the 45 box. We'll, actually it did. I was preparing for gig the other day, going through a box of 45s and re discovered this Sweet Soul record from 72. I've been listening to the Coke Escovedo version for the last few weeks which is also Fantastic.

Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier began writing and recording these hits, "Don't Leave Me Starvin' For Your Love" and "Why Can't We Be Lovers" on Invictus. They recorded as a duo in 1973, the year that the partnership ended. Lamont Dozier than pursued a solo recording career and had hits with "Trying to Hold on to My Woman," "Fish Ain't Biting," and "Let Me Start Tonight" on ABC Records in 1974. Later he switched to Warner Brothers and then to Columbia. Dozier produced Areatha Franklin's 1977 album Sweet Passion and wrote for Simply Red, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, and Phil Collins during the '80s. In 1991, he recorded Inside Seduction for Atlantic Records.

MAYER HAWTHORNE :: IMPRESSIONS

Not mad at Mayer Hawthornes Free Project Titled "Impressions" release courtesy of Stones Throw Records. I know, I know, its free and I'm sure a vinyl release is in the works.

On some real talk, I can only take a few songs before the urge to change things up. I personally dig the originals but appreciate his Modern take. Something about his voice makes me laugh!!! I cant take Mayer Hawthorne singing voice serious. But hey if you like it, I ain't mad at ya!

Download the album free.
MAYER HAWTHORNE IMPRESSIONS ALBUM i

Hawthorne explains:

w1. Work To Do

This one features my live band, The County: Quentin Joseph on drums, Topher Mohr on guitar, Quincy McCrary on piano, and Joe Abrams on bass. It was recorded live in a radio station studio somewhere during our Winter 2010 US tour. The tapes recently surfaced, but nobody can remember exactly where we were. The song is originally by The Isley Brothers, and that’s the only version I was familiar with until we started playing it in our live shows and people would come up to us and say “hey, loved your cover of Average White Band!”.

2. Don’t Turn The Lights On

My favorite track from Chromeo’s latest LP. On the surface it’s an electro-funk, dance floor filler, but underneath is a brilliant love ballad with lyrics that reminded me of something from Tyrone Davis. Dave1 (of Chromeo) told me the song is about a guy who falls in love with a ghost, so I wanted my version to have an eerie, ghostly feel to it. Quincy McCrary played the creepy piano solo at the end.

3. You’ve Got The Makings Of A Lover

Textbook Northern Soul from a little known Dallas, Texas group called The Festivals. I was digging for records in NY with my homey DJ Kurse, and the shopkeeper played the 45 in the store. Both of us immediately ran up to the counter and said “yo! what is THAT?!”. The original version was recorded in the late 60s, and the mix isn’t very good. I wanted a version that I could bump. Quentin Joseph played the drums and we recorded them at Sam Beaubien’s studio in Detroit. That’s Sam playing the trumpet as well.

4. Fantasy Girl

This song was written and composed by an amazing man from Pasadena named Steve Salazar. He was born with a heart condition and passed away at the young age of 27. Before he died he recorded one incredible album of demos in the mid-70s with a band called Shorty’s Portion. Peanut Butter Wolf found a copy of the album and I loved it so much that he gave it to me (thanks Wolf!). The vinyl had a handwritten note tucked in the sleeve that was addressed to anyone who could help the band with management, a record deal, radio airplay, etc. I’d estimate there were less than 300 copies pressed. That’s my Dad playing pedal steel guitar and Topher Mohr shredding the guitar solo on my version.

5. Little Person

Jon Brion is not from this planet. He penned this song for the soundtrack to Charlie Kaufman’s film “Synecdoche, NY”. I didn’t get the film at all, but I really got the soundtrack. The original has only female vocal and piano, but I always heard a larger arrangement. Hubert Alexander played some of the piano and I did everything else.

6. Mr. Blue Sky

This one also features my band, The County, and was recorded live, in one take, in a tiny makeshift tent, at a festival in Dour, Belgium. Here’s the video from that recording session…

VANS SHOES :: MR CARTOON

The Pritchard represents a new movement in the sneaker world that represents versatility and sophistication the younger generation is demanding: a shoe that feels and skates like a sneaker, yet has enough refinement and tact to be worn out for an evening on the town. The Pritchard truly embodies this all-day adaptability.

Just dropped, Van's latest commercial highlights OTW and the Pritchard appeal with help from Mister Cartoon in his dope 58 Impala.
