These are our favorite local homies that we've been digging lately. If you haven't heard B. Bravo & The Starship Connection it's some of the best funk we've heard in a long time. We first heard K-Maxx's tune "Super Drunk" when he passed us a cdr last year at a Dam-Funk show. These are the people we think of when you ask who the funkiest people in the Bay are these days.

~~~~~
B. Bravo & The Starship Connection
– Bay Area modern funk sorcerer B. Bravo has assembled a crew of intergalactic badmen to form The Starship Connection - a synthesizer funk / future bass quartet featuring Bay Area instrumentalists Teeko (F.A.M.E./FourOne Funk), Daren Grant (Bayonics), and Bob Menacho (Bayonics). Like a space age love-child of Parliament, Zapp and Mtume tinged with modern electronic dance sensibilities, The Starship Connection's colorful sound and genre transcending style is sure to blow your musical mind wide open while you sweat it out on the dancefloor. In addition to playing classic B. Bravo joints like Midnite and Computa Love, the crew performs brand new original bangers live on their dazzling array of analog gear. Their debut EP (Jointly produced by Bravo & Teeko), featuring the massive bounce cut 'The Roll Out' and mid tempo funk-bomb 'More than Just a Dream' is set for release in early 2012 on Frite Nite Records.
K-Maxx
- K-Maxx, aka Ken Hopkins, lives for the music. He's a Bay Area original from San Francisco, who's been involved with artists such as Dan the Automator, Too Short, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), King Tech (Wake Up Show) and more. Releasing two acclaimed underground albums during the Bay's initial reign in the 90's, K-Maxx began the early 2000's with his seminal "Ghetto Gumbo" radio show which can be heard Friday Nights on KPOO in San Francisco. He returned to the music forefront in 2006, producing for artists like 05' B.A.R.S Underground Artist of the Year, Andre Nickatina and co-writing and producing the hit single "Tuesday" for R&B Legend Lenny Williams, which was recently in the Top 30 Urban AC nationwide. A multi-instrumentalist using many methods to create his soundscapes, K-Maxx draws from a diverse array of influences and experiences to create a truly original sound. K-Maxx is working on releasing a single for his tune "Super Dunk" with the help of Sweater Funk's Sean Boogie. Of course, it'll be on vinyl so you can hear loud in the basement!
DAM FUNK + MASTER BLAZTER
Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dãm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
Master Blazter demonstrates how the LA modern funk and boogie scene is starting to bubble and boil over. Three musicians with their own distinctive styles have come together to form Master Blazter. Each individual is an integral part of the whole - each necessary to keep funk music alive and drive it to unforeseen heights. Computer Jay develops hard hitting tracks built upon moog, rhodes and personally tweaked electro systems. J1 provides the backbone of rhythm on drums, while equally being comfortable producing quality funk laced beats. D-F adds his signature vocals and provides layers of deep grooves with his own keyboards and keytar.
MATTHEWDAVID
A willowy figure with wide smiles, his gentle presence and generous talents made him a welcome addition to internationally applauded LA creative circles: dublab, Poo-Bah, Low End Theory and Brainfeeder. Constant collaboration with these collectives helped inspire Matthewdavid to a build a platform of his own. His Leaving Records label has an ear to the next and an eye on the original. Through all these outlets Matthewdavid is dedicated to sharing elevated sounds and visions.
Matthewdavid's live performances are akin to watching a sorcerer conjure spirits from the deep. He pulls tones like artifacts from an astral trail that ebbs and flows with fresh discoveries. Along the way Matthewdavid collects exotic sound figures: spiraling amethyst cones and wild flowering buds. He treats each found sound like a bright fiber to be weaved into new waveforms. Outmind pulsates with this sense of constant discovery. It is a mosaic sparkling with mystic, radiant matter.
DEVONWHO
L.A based via Portland producer Devonwho drops some spacey electronic funk vibe of West Coast producers like Dam Funk. He has been making some noise in the West Coast’s thriving beat scene. His set at Portland's Do-Over was said to be "a producer's delight!"
SWEATER FUNK CREW
San Francisco's Sweater Funk crew have been repping boogie, modern soul, and steppers for 3+ years in a tiny basement in China Town. Having hosted and played with heavy international DJs/musicians such as Kon & Amir, Daz I Kue, Onra, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam Funk and Steve Arrington, the crew has been known to rock a party and leave a trail of happy sweaty dancers in their wake.
THE INCREDIBLES
This record by "The Incredibles" is very special to me. The original pressing belonged to my pops, who's had this in his collection since a teen. A few years ago I was fortunate to inherit POP"s 45 collection, I guess he felt I was ready. Fourty years in the family.
That's the beauty about old soul music, enjoying the same tunes your parents grew up on. To me, this style of music is timeless.
LITTLE HELEN :: MORE & MORE
Picked this up during a recent dig, Little Helen "More & More" on Soul Town Records. Another fine classic that is all about vocals.
HOW THE RICH STEAL A BANKSY ORIGINAL
Preserving the Future of Street Art or POP Culture phenom???
Slamxhype reports, "Keszler Gallery" has already opened the doors for their 'Original Street Works' exhibition featuring Banky’s street art. Lifted from their original walls in Los Angeles, Palestine, Brighton and New Orleans, dating back to as far as 2002, these works are now collected and being presented in one location. The video above features the process involved in transporting the 'Stop and Search' and 'Wet Dog' pieces from Palestine to the United Kingdom and getting the works ready for their current location in New York. The gallery is geared to run til September 30."
PRIMO ON WILL SESSIONS :: ELMATIC
With the impending release of “The Elmatic Instrumentals,” DJ Premier took some time to check out the new interpretations of some of his classic productions, as covered by Detroit band Will Sessions.
After explaining the background behind the beat for “Memory Lane,” he’s predictably impressed with the new instrumental versions for “Represent” and “Detroit State of Mind.”
“The Elmatic Instrumentals” will be released worldwide on September 27 on CD, 180g Vinyl, and digital formats.
MASTERPLAN :: DANCE ALL NITE
Killer 70s cross over tune from Masterplan (78)... This one is hard to track down, but I happened to pick this up for a very good price. "Dance All Nite" is one of those feel good uptempo numbers that keeps you going on the dance floor. I think I'm going to drop this 45 at Sweater Funk for our next steppers night.
MASTERPLAN - DANCE ALL NITE 1978
SOMEBODY PLEASE :: SAN JOSE
OMNI :: DONT BE SELFISH
The group were one of the few last links in the Chicago soul scene at the time – and they've got a good harmony sound that hearkens back to mid 70s work by groups like The Chi-Lites or Windy City. Most tracks are in the midtempo range, with a fair bit of synthesizer and keyboard work – but the vocals are still the strongest part of the record, and they're allowed to shine nicely.
The Lyrics on this tune say it all!!!!
THE SUTTONS :: A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE
Last Saturday I was preparing for a gig, benefit for local San Jose Low Rider Model Chole. ( scroll down to see info) While I was going through 12's I red discovered this Suttons LP from 84 titled "So Good" Not a killer album, although the track titled " A whole lot of love" makes up for the whole LP. I knew this had to go in the bag for these Low Riders. Later that night this one got them on the dance floor. BOOM!
THE SUTTONS - A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE 1984
THE CHANNELS :: DOO WOP
Picked up this Sweet Doo Wop number from The Channels at the local record shop a few weeks back. Always good to have a variety of oldies for the proper occasion. Not mad at this find.
On a side note I've been staying real busy, finally catching up on recording records again. Sorry for the delay on musical content, but I'll have a bunch of new tunes to share this week. Enjoy this one
BANK OF AMERICA :: THE ORIGINAL BANK ROBBER
YOU THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE OF BANK OF AMERICA!!!
Bank of America received $45 billion in bailout money, however that hasn’t stopped the company from finding new ways to milk the most money out of their customers. On Friday, Bank of America announced a new debit card fee that will charge customers $5 per month simply for using their debit cards.
The debit card fee will begin in the first few months of 2012. At first, Bank of America will start charging the debit card fee in only a few starts. Over time, the bank expects to make this a policy around the globe.
Are you willing to pay $5 per month just for using your debit card? I know I’m not. I’ll find a bank that won’t look for every opportunity to steal money from me. It just doesn’t make any sense: use your debit card once for a $2 purchase and get charged $5 on top? No thanks, Bank of America.
Why is Bank of America charging a debit card fee? They say it’s a response to the new regulations that have limited how much they can charge merchants per debit card transaction. I don’t buy it.
THE STEP KIDS :: LEGEND IN HIS OWN MIND
The Step Kids LP is finally available where good music is sold. Below is their new video for the song title " A legend in his own mind" Great video.
WHO ARE THE STEP KIDS????
The Stepkids are three singer/songwriters. “A lot of what excites us about this band is this band itself,” says bassist and keyboardist Dan Edinberg. “It’s not either of us; it’s about creating an entity where the entity itself is what’s important.” As a result, every song on the Stepkids self-titled debut album is written with equal input from each member.
“All three of us write and all three of us sing,” says Jeff Gitelman, who resigned from touring as Alicia Keys' guitarist to concentrate full-time on recording the Stepkids self-titled debut album. Drummer Tim Walsh continues, “There's an equal split in the creative process. Any lyric, any melody, any idea could have been done by any of us.”
This approach comes from more than a decade of musical experimentation and experience. Raised on the East Coast jazz and R&B circuit, individual band members went on to share stages with 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill, tour internationally with indie punk band Zox, score movies and commercials and produce solo albums.
The Stepkids groove is a fusion of punk and jazz, West African and 1960s folk, neo and classic soul, classic funk and 20th century classical. The band produce, engineer and record themselves on a reel-to-reel.
There’s no singular icon, no singular sound, and no singular way of making it happen for the Stepkids. It’s psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole.
