NEW STYLE CAR CLUB

The ‘70’s are considered to be the greatest time period in Lowriding history by all the purists, veterans, and founding fathers who were blessed enough to have grown up in this era. It was a beautiful time, as ambition exceeded innovation, forcing key holders to be more dedicated to their rides and peers than many of the casual cruisers of today. Yes, they lived and breathed it back then, and it’s safe to say that the picnics and cruises from the 70’s are something that we will never see again. During that time many car clubs began forming, with a common agenda and priority of cruising the Boulevard on the weekends. Southern California had Whittier to cruise and Northern California had Story, and King making these areas the proving grounds of those early days. It is said that as many as 15,000 people would show up on the weekend to cruise Story and King, but only a very small handful of those in attendance would make their presence felt. One club that always made their collective presence felt on that special cruising spot was New Style Car Club. Not only were they a force to be reckoned with on the Boulevard, but also at car shows throughout California, where they began to earn a reputation of building and driving quality Lowriders.

“I started New Style car club in ’73,” states the Lowrider Hall of Famer, Andy Douglas. “We were all in high school when we started it [the club], but we didn’t break out the official club until ’74.” All of the original New Style members grew up in the gang infested East Side of San Jose, CA., where they attended Overfelt High School. “We were at the Jack In The Box (on Story and King) when we got the idea to start the club,” recalls Rick Garcia. “It was Andy, my brother Manuel, Robert, and I that had the idea, but Andy was the one that said ‘Let’s get it going,’” explains Rick. “Andy is the founder of the club, he is a real go getter,” says Rick with admiration. Two blocks away from the infamous intersection at Andy’s parents’ house on Gainesville Ave, is where Andy provided the first hydraulic installations in San Jose. “That’s also where New Style started,” says Andy. “We (New Style) were the first club in San Jose with 5.20’s and hydraulics,” Rick notes with pride. “People used to make fun of our wheels,” laughs Tony Bueno. “They used to say that we had bicycle wheels.” Of course, this was before everyone else in the area jumped on board with the 5.20 look.

Andy is famous for bringing hydraulics to the masses in the ‘70’s, but it was a friend of his named “Poppy” from East Los Angeles that inspired him. “Poppy was my friend from East L.A.,” explains Andy. “He got the L.A. look inspired in me.” The 5.20’s, the dropped rear with the front lifted was something that Andy picked up from visiting his friend Poppy in East Los Angeles.

In ’74, the four-member club went down to New House in the Los Angeles area to have plaques made up for the club. “The original name for the club was The Style,” explains Andy. Once he and the rest of The Style members got to the shop, they saw plaques with a name too similar to theirs. The plaques hanging on the wall read New Style. They started debating on the name since they didn’t want a name that was too similar to another club’s name. The guy working told them that New Style was an LA-based car club that broke off from a club called Santa Ana Classics. The club had ordered the plaques but fell apart before they even got started. “We called the club and found out that they had a big fallout,” says Andy. The worker told them that he had 20 plaques ready to go and if they wanted them, they wouldn’t have to pay for the molding since they were already made. Needless to say, this good fortune drove them to change the club name right then and there to “New Style.”

CHARLES BRADLEY :: SAN FRANCISCO TONIGHT

BUY TICKETS

Charles Bradley was down and out when Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records happened upon him performing his Black Velvet act at the Tarheel Lounge in Bed Stuy. Roth recognized his raw talent and directly brought him into the Daptone “House of Soul” Studios for a session with the Sugarman 3. "Take It As It Comes" was Charles' first single on Daptone and it proved him as a worthy vocalist. Roth eventually brought Charles out to Staten Island to see Dirt Rifle and the Bullets, a young funk band playing James Brown and Meters influenced songs. Thomas Brenneck, songwriter and guitarist for the Bullets, hit it off with Charles and they began working together. They released two singles on Daptone under the name “Charles Bradley and the Bullets,” but the Bullets soon dismantled in order to form the afrobeat influenced Budos Band.

However, Brenneck knew that Charles had something more to give and after moving to Bushwick himself, he and Charles reunited. In time, they became close friends and Charles confided his life story in Brenneck. The young producer was moved when he heard Charles tell the painful story of his brother’s death. Brenneck said, "Charles, we gotta put that story to music."

At the time, Brenneck was in the process of forming Menahan Street Band, an amalgamation of members of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions and Antibalas. You may not know it, but you've probably heard the Menahan Street Band. Jay-Z sampled their signature horn sound for his smash "Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)" while Kid Cudi sampled their guitar lines for "Mr. Solo Dolo." The list goes on as Menahan Street Band is quickly becoming one of the most sampled current bands in the business. All this shouldn't come as a surprise for those who have checked out the band on their own. The music is steeped in classic soul and afrobeat but displays an acute awareness for hip hop. It is lush, gritty, retro and modern all at the same time.

Formed in Brenneck's bedroom, Mehanan Street Band began as a studio project. Brenneck was looking to record music in between his busy tour schedules when he called in friends from all sides of the Brooklyn Soul Scene. Each track was recorded over time with a rotating rhythm section all topped with the unique horn stylings of Dave Guy and Leon Michels. The final result was exciting to all those involved, and Brenneck released the first Menahan Street Band single, "Make The Road By Walking" on his burgeoning label, Dunham Records, a division of Daptone Records. Dunham continued to release Menahan Street Band singles and eventually a full-length album, Make The Road By Walking.

The records are characterized by an experimental element. Whether it be a unique instrument or simply an unusual beat, Menahan Street Band attempts to broaden the horizon of funk and soul music through these qualities. However, the term experimental far from describes the final product. The music is always founded in a solid beat and simple changes making it accessible to a broad spectrum of listeners. Brenneck's dedication to high quality analog sound is another staple element of the “Menahan Sound.” The process of recording to tape -- the limited track count, the tape edits, the natural tape compression -- has a great influence on the final product.

Brenneck’s new sound was the perfect compliment for the heartfelt and troubled lyrics that sprang from Charles’ story. With drummer Homer Steinweiss, Brenneck launched Dunham Records in 2008 and released Charles’ "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)" and "Heartaches and Pain" as its’ second single. A departure from his Black Velvet act, the songs showed a new side of Charles as a compelling artist in his own right and proved to be a great success. Many late night writing and recording sessions later, he and Brenneck completed their first full-length record, No Time For Dreaming. Charles always knew he was born to entertain, but in the making of this record he discovered a proclivity for songwriting as well. The record was a labor of love for both Charles and Brenneck. Charles and the Menahan Street Band have been touring, while Charles has been honing his passion as a singer and an entertainer. After years of working together, No Time For Dreaming is due for international release on Dunham Records.

STYLE WARS 2 :: COMING SOON

Directed by Tony Silver and produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, Style Wars is regarded as the indispensable document of New York Street culture of the early '80s, the filmic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis. The film captured the look and feel of New York's ramshackle subway system as graffiti writers' public playground, battleground and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the New York Transit Authority. Meanwhile MCs, DJs and B-boys rocked the city with new sounds and new moves and street corner breakdance battles evolved into performance art. Now, we enter a world with Style Wars 2.

Of this new "semi-sequel" effort, the backers note:
It is a completely original film that makes intelligent and extremely funny references to our nearly thirty-year-old film, but in contemporary situations. They use clever dialog and audio quotes from Style Wars to establish the context. In ironic, and often hilarious scenes, they engage various elements of the film’s narrative, such as the conflict with the authorities, the cross-out wars, and the emergence of graffiti in the art world, in surprising ways. The film that Amos Angeles and Veli Silver are engaged in making is a refreshing departure [from hackneyed ideas on the subject].

WE LIKE IT LIKE THAT :: THE STORY OF LATIN BOOGALOO

From 1965 to 1970, musicians in New York City fused English and Spanish lyrics with Afro-Cuban, jazz, rock and R&B rhythms and melodies to create Latin boogaloo. It was a period of revolution and social awakening and young Latinos in search of their identity, growing up in neighborhoods like East Harlem and the South Bronx, adopted Latin boogaloo as their soundtrack.

This audience, once on the verge of leaving Latin music behind, now came to appreciate it. With the emergence of salsa, another New York creation, some say the Latin boogaloo was killed off, not by the fans, but by industry politics. We Like It Like That explores this fascinating, though often overlooked, bridge in Latin music history, seeking to understand its context in the story of Latinos in America and its continued influence around the world today.

Featuring original interviews with Joe Bataan, Johnny Colon, Ricardo Ray, Jimmy Sabater (of the Joe Cuba Sextet), Joey Pastrana, Larry Harlow, Harvey Averne, Angel Lebron (of the Lebron Brothers), Benny Bonilla (of the the Pete Rodriguez band), Felipe Luciano, Aurora Flores, Sandra Maria Esteves, Alex Masucci, Oliver Wang, Juan Flores, Bobby Sanabria, Bobbito Garcia and others.

A work in progress cut of the film premiered in New York City at Central Park Summer Stage on August 10th, alongside an amazing concert with Mr. Boogaloo Blues, Johnny Colon and the king of Latin soul, Joe Bataan.

We filmed the event and plan to include footage from what turned out to be a truly special and historic night in the final version of the film. Read more about the event at the Summer Stage Website and watch Johnny and Joe discuss their music and promote the event, along with DJ Turmix on the ABC7 show Tiempo.

Where Will the Funds Go?

The funds from this campaign will see us through the final edit of the film and help us buy the rights to more of the archival footage needed to complete and officially release the film.

Because We Like It Like That is a music documentary, we are also in the process of securing rights to the songs that we highlight in the film. If we raise any money over our funding level we will put it towards buying song rights.

Why Kickstarter?

We have finished about 3/4 of the film! It has taken almost two years to get to this point, but we are thankful to be here. However, making a documentary is only half the work. Releasing the film is the other half. Through Kickstarter we hope to raise enough funds to put us well on our way towards completing the film for submission to major film festivals, PBS, a possible theatrical release and a successful DVD release. Our reason for making this film has been to inform the public about this incredible period in New York City and Latin music history, and to put a spotlight on the music of these phenomenal artists, whose musical contributions have been overlooked for too long.

How do I keep updated on the film?

LUVSTEP 2 :: DIRTY SOUTH JOE & FLUFFTRONIX

Soon to be Future Classic!!!

WHAT IS LUVSTEP?

Luvstep 2 is the sound of electronic gruv glide inside lazer guided lullabies. It’s a return to innocence through experience, best expressed with headphones or in bedrooms. It’s melody for the mess we’re in – the love, the lust, the loss, the lies, the light & the life!

Dirty South Joe & Flufftronix are the messengers and Luvstep is the message. Cross over and come inside.
