NOW SHOWING AT RED VIC (SF) 2 DAYS ONLY

The aptly titled Soul Power features incredible footage from a 1974 concert in Zaire, staged just weeks before the famous Ali-Foreman heavy weight-boxing match. Black American artists who flew to Zaire (then ruled by U.S.-backed dictator Mobutu) were clearly thrilled to be performing in the capital city of Kinshasa, and the pleasure of the local crowd is obvious as well. The resultant joyous back and forth captured by an ace camera and sound crew make this a truly great concert film. Performers burning up the screen include James Brown, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, B. B. King, Miriam Makeba, the Spinners and Bill Withers. (93m)
