WARDELL PIPER

WARDELL PIPER - CAPTAIN BOOGIE 1979

NITE RIDE

Bump this while rolling with your Lady on a nice summer Night!

Mostly late 80s grooves selected 2 Step Lou and Sabrina the French Boogie Queen (of the sweaterfunk crew). They carefully selected these grooves to fit a certain vibe. That vibe is a summertime "ridin around in the city at night" type vibe. Clear night, full moon, windows down, top dropped, volume up etc. Just cruisin. Check out the sounds below, and purchase a copy($4 or free to sweaterfunk regulars). This is not a mix meant to be listened to at your compyuter.

JOSE JAMES

All it takes is one voice to get the ball rolling. This young chap is bringing the mature soul game to the younger audience.. Its about time!!!

JOSE JAMES -PROMISE IN LOVE

Brooklyn based, half-Irish and half-Panamanian José James sounds like a soulful cross between Gil Scott Heron, Terry Callier and Kurt Elling. He's definitely a jazz singer and we don't seem to have enough of those, especially younger ones to take the form forward. He sings here as part of a basic quartet made up of him, Nori Ochiai on piano, Alexi David on bass and Steve Lyman on drums - though Luke Damrosch plays drums on "The Dreamer" and "blackeyedsusan" and Junior Mance plays piano on "Spirits Up Above".

There's another slight variation to the line-up (and general vibe of the album) on "Park Bench People", where Ryan Blum takes up keyboards and Gal Ben Haim plays guitar. Blum also plays keys on the album closer, the drum & bass-inspired "Love". Omar Abdukarim also plays trumpet albeit, on the title track only.

José James - Interview
Uploaded by on-point. - Explore more music videos.

It isn't the most exciting album I've ever heard (James just doesn't have the vocal range for that and I'm grateful that "Love" was included here) but it's certainly very interesting and what he may lack in vocal range, he more than makes up for in tone and warmth. I'd never heard of José James before (I believe it was my buddy Joe who pointed him out to me - thanks Joe!) and I think this is his first album. What I can't take away from the man however, is his undeniable songwriting, producing and arranging talent and I also have to give him respect for deciding to go this route when pop or r&b could have potentially offered him so much more, so much more quickly. He obviously loves and believes in what he's doing. He can only get better from here and I look forward to that. Definitely one to look out for.

Mostly produced and arranged by James himself and executive produced by no other than the legendary Giles Peterson - a man who knows a thing or two about good music if anyone does - "The Dreamer" could be the ideal soundtrack to your summer family gatherings, card games, cocktails parties, or that midnight hour. Highly recommended.

SAN FRANCISCO's OWN - ADRIANA EVANS

BEEN talking about Adiana Evans for a minute. She has to be one of my top 5 modern soul singers at the moment.

DRIZABONE SOUL FAMILY

It's hard to believe that nearly a generation has passed since the late 1980s and early 1990s. That means that in the "what's old is new again" world that is popular music, listeners will be treated (or consigned) to music made in or influenced by that era. This will be something of a treat for people who liked the progressive soul and R&B sounds emanating from across the pond during those years. The music of bands like Loose Ends, Soul II Soul and Incognito found a willing audience in the states during that time.

Fans of these groups enjoyed the way they paid reverence to the American sounds of blues, jazz and soul by putting a right now spin on their original songs. People also dug the energy bands like Incognito pumped into old soul classics like Stevie's "Don't You Worry ‘Bout a Thing." Many people believe that the British progressive soul sound of that era was a precursor for the so-called neo-soul movement that hit America starting in the late 1990s.

CHROMEO - NEW MUSIC VIDEO

the BASS LINES are getting better my friends...

Again, another cool video with great art direction. I was reading some blogs and it seems some young people are thrown back with videos that have been floating around lately. I grew up to weird videos like these. It's called the 20 year cycle its nothing new. In the 80s the video was just as important artistically as the song. Now people are starting to realize that music videos means more than advertising your bottle of liquor, clothes, and the club...

MARK RONSON

Mark Ronson & The Business INTL "Bang Bang Bang" from Warren Fu on Vimeo.

The new video from Mark Ronsons release - BANG BANG BANG was produced by Warren Fu who did a fantastic job visually. I love the whole Voltron theme. The song takes me back to few music genres from decades ago with a modern twist. The vibe is definitely on some Go-Go, 80s Synth pop & New Wave. After a few listens I was hooked singing along. Now the song is stuck in my head.

Q-Tip Baby. Rumor has it - Since his studio burnt down awhile back he lost tons of records. I heard he's been stocking up on Modern Soul, Boogie and Steppers... "TIP" if you read this -Come play SWEATER FUNK
