I'm so ready for the show at the Galaxy this SUNDAY!!! I brought my sealed copy of Singing Some Soul and I look forward to meeting Joe back stage. Oh man what rare treat!!!
Running man was on late last nigh, by the way this is one of my all time favorite movies and I was all about it. Arnold's acting career in the 80s and early 90s dominated action movie screens with time less "MAN" flick including this one. He has so many great quotes, there all hilarious. Here's a little something I found for all you die hard Arnold fans..
Another tragic death. This one really sting s. Dennis Hopper had me the very first time I saw Easy Rider! Great "MAN" flick!!! I was bummed once I heard the news but like many other legends you legacy will live on.
Soul Jazz Records are reissuing this seminal Roy Ayers album, originally released on Roy Ayers own independent Uno Melodic label in 1983. A rare groove classic!
The album is one of Ayers’ deepest releases stylistically, spanning everything from Fela Kuti-Afrobeat to seminal 80s boogie funk. The album includes the super-dark ‘Chicago’, much loved by Moodyman, Theo Parrish and other Detroit minimalists.
Recorded around the time of other seminal Roy Ayers productions such as ‘Eighties Ladies’ and ‘Sylvia Striplin’, this really is as good as it gets.
Remastered from the original master tapes, the CD comes in Soul Jazz Records mini-box-pack edition with limited edition postcards. The vinyl edition comes for the first time ever on super-loud, super-heavyweight gatefold-sleeve double vinyl (making it better than the original!).
The new video for Juan MacLean's "Feel So Good" track from his DJ-Kicks is basically a lesson in having fun and doing your own thing. Director Harry Dwyer harnesses the carefree spirit of the track for a video emphasizes the track's infectiousness with stop motion animation. And some wicked dance moves.
Don't miss Juan MacLean on tour throughout June. Like his DJ KiCKS mix, Juan MacLean's DJ set is a love letter to straight-up house music. Expect a driving, sweaty session thick with pumping keys and velvety warm bottom end sexing up dancefloors.

George Benson can sing and play the jazz guitar like no other. Timeless tunes from a artist who is slept on and overlooked in the record bins. Yeah you may see LP and 12" in the dollar bins, PICK EM UP!!!
Released March 2008 Recloose - Perfect timing is a well diverse album exploring the disco/boogie, electronic funk rage that seem to be sweeping the nation.
Think funk anthems blasting through dirty party scenes. Think slow jams for reclining.
A nearly exact replica of the legendary hip hop sequencer, the AKAI MPC 2000 XL, in the form of a 2 inch wide, 4GB USB Flash Drive. There's an incredible amount of detail on this piece, down to the colors and the raised buttons, knobs and text. To reveal the USB plug, you simply pull it apart down the middle and bam... you got 4 Gigs of compact flash drive space to take with wherever you may go. Only a few in stock..
This is so RAD!!!!! As a fellow toy nerd I need this in the collection!!!
Man.... I grew up watching you on Different Strokes.... I know the guy has had some hard time in the past few years with his career, court battles and personal health issues. Speaking for a generation who watched Gary Coleman as a little guy we will never forget you.
Yes!!! Our beloved home girl Chung-Tech (Sweater Funk) delivers us with a fresh mix recorded live at Devils Pie April 22nd. If you don't know Chung-Tech let me warn you! The girl has fire and can take out most dudes with her RECORD collection. We are so blessed to have Christina part of the crew!
please take the MIC away from this guy! You'll hear what I'm talking about.
Here’s a local fun fact about Bolinas, California: the town is secluded, intentionally kept a small and tight community known for taking down any signs leading off the highway to its location, and kept pretty much exactly as it was thirty years ago. Sounds like the perfect location for art couple Barry McGee and Clare Rojas to exhibit their work together.
With this announcement, the San Francisco Bay Area based artists Barry McGee and Clare Rojas are doing something they haven’t done together in a long time: exhibit their art in an exhibition side by side. Coming up Saturday, June 19th, 2010 the duo will show off their wildly influential works at the Bolinas Museum.
Barry McGee aka Twist, has been a major player in the San Francisco art scene for the past two decades. McGee rose out of the Mission School art movement and graffiti boom of the 90s and creates iconic works exploring urban life and social ills in our modern world.
Clare Rojas’ works depict women, men, nature and animals as strong and weak, caring and connected to one another in their struggle to find harmony and balance. Both artists are known to shy away from media and the public eye, so the Bolinas setting should be an ideal habitat in which to unveil this important exhibit.
Barry McGee’s work is on display now as part of the SF MoMA’s 75th Anniversary exhibit.
The lovey and beautiful Norah Jones was featured vocalist on the 2003 "Wax Poetic album Nu Blu" Great Modern Soul tune...
The New York trip-hop outfit Wax Poetic came together in 1997 under the reign of Turkish-born music guru Ilhan Ersahin. The group originated at the popular and now-defunct club Save the Robots, and consisted of a volatile group of musicians jamming together to create a heavy groove of drum 'n' bass blended with quick dance elements. Ersahin and company signed to Atlantic in the latter '90s and released their debut self-titled album in June 2000
Classic Ronnie Laws track which was sampled by "Doom". Respect to the Jazz Funk era in music. There's a new "Jazz Funk" Scene brewing up, and the new bands are heavy. Before we get into all the pay respects to the originals...
A TASTE OF SOUL; ITS THE REAL THING COMING JUNE 4TH (SF)
In 1991, five UC Berkeley graduates Creighton Cole, Kirk Harper, Michael O’Connor, Eric Roth and Gerry Villareal established a nightclub at 30 Rose Street, San Francisco named Mr. Fives. Their mission was to provide a positive clubhouse for events from plays, film screenings, receptions, to live performances and massive dance parties. To them and their patrons the details mattered, the message mattered and the music mattered. “Positive never negative”, from Gang Starr was their mantra.
All five were highly influenced by the 80s UK Mod Movement, politically progressive and shared an appreciation for modern design, art, film and music. Their ethnic make-up and backgrounds couldn’t be more diverse yet they came together through their passion for music, in particular, black music from the 60s through the 90s. They understood the historical continuum of the music, appreciated the undervalued artist or song and wanted to share it with people. Best of all their timing was right. In the late 80s and early 90s, Acid Jazz, Soul, Reggae & House were hitting on all cylinders and many refer to this period as a Golden Age for many of those genres—Mr. Fives was smack dab in the middle.
Looking back over 20 years, Mr. Fives means many different things to many people and evokes many fond memories. For those who were fortunate to experience the era first hand, they all agree that what set Mr. Fives apart from other venues was the diversity of the people, the dynamic underground black music, the tight knit sense of community and life-long friendships that were forged during that time.
Today we offer an all too brief snapshot of that special place & time...Mr. Fives! MR. FIVES MIX
