HENRIK SCHWARTZ

HENRIK SCHARTZ MAKES THE MOST INTERESTING TECHNO/ELECTRONIC MUSIC WITH HEAVY JAZZ/SOULFUL INFLUENCE. ITS RARE THESE DAYS TO BE DIVERSE AMONG A SEA OF BANGING ELECTRO, AND GHB FUELED UP MUSIC. I LOVE THE VARIETY OF SYNTHS HENRIK USES WITH DEEP SOULFUL VOCALS ACCOMPANIED BY JAZZY PIANO RIFFS. LOVE IT

KRAAK AND SMAAK - NO SUN IN THE SKY (HENRIK SCHARTZ REMIX) 2007

HIP-HOUSE

When I was in NYC, I picked up this Ayers and Cosmo Bakers Hip House Vol. 2 comp...this track stands out most because QUIK has a special place in my heart ever since I saw him play live here in SF at DNA lounge. He doesn't age! He still had his hair braided up like on the cover of his greatest hits....the outro is short but work with it! 320kbps

DJ QUIK-SEXUALITY

QUANTIC - NOT SO BLUE

ROCKERS HIFI PUSH, PUSH / TRANSMISSION

ONE OF MY FAVORITE DUBBY DOWNTEMPO ELECTRONIC GROUP THAT WERE VERY CONSISTENT IN THE MID 90'S. I REALLY LOVE THE OLD SCHOOL TECHNO SYNTHS MIXED WITH THE DUBBY VOCALS AND VINTAGE HOUSE DRUMS. STRAIGHT CLASSIC. IF YOU EVER SEE ANY OF THERE VINYL SNAG IT UP. THIS IS TIMELESS MUSIC. I STILL LOVING PLAYING THESES RECORDS.

SWEATER FUNK LINE UP FOR MAY

SWEATER FUNK
80s funk, boogie disco & soulful steppers
a free weekly party in the basement of li po in SF's china town

Jeez we stacked May for y'all! We got some special appearances at various clubs around town, a new happy hour, maybe another BBQ (who's gonna host us!?!?!?!?!?)! Read On!

May 3rd - Shred One & Mama Bear - This sunday we're hosting our very own DJ Shred One and her adopted sister DJ Mama Bear. Shred has been a Sweater Funk resident for a minute now so you've probably seen her playing, dancing, recording, or repairing her jellys with some duct tape in the basement so as to keep on dancing! That's just how our girl rolls, ain't no stopping her. Mama Bear's been a staunch supporter of our thing for a long minute, we've been waiting to get her in the basement to throw down her funkiest cuts, she's not one to let the dancefloor down. Oh by the way, these ladies are some tight homies, you know they're gonna be vibing and partying the entire set, it's gonna be infectious.

May 10th - Selector Kirk & Jason - What can I say, this dude Kirk epitomizes "luxury soul". What's that. Come down to the basement and feel it. Smooth, funky, rare, og modern soul and steppers and never let you down with the boogie. There's a reason we asked this dude into our family, so so solid. Jason is Kirks tight bro from way back when. Seriously, these dudes have been throwing it down longer that most of us have been past puberty! Just something about getting two homies together to play some music, it's just a vibe you gotta experience. Oh, this dude is a slave to the song, he will let that 12" run to the end just so you can hear the illest dubbed out shit at the end of the tune. Classy.

May 17th - Consuelo - "Born in Berkeley and raised in the bay, DJ Consuelo counts his blessings to have been influenced by a lot of the great music and attitude that are unique to the bay. From rocking hip hop, classics, reggae, salsa and mash ups to throwing down deep and dirty house sets, Consuelo aims to put music together in unique and moving ways that reflect both his hunger for pairing classic cuts with new inspired sounds and his love for moving a crowd.Setting a sexy sophisticated tone, DJ Consuelo is one to vibe with."

Yeah. That's from his myspace. My opinion: I've never seen this dude have a bad night behind the decks. Experience counts for something, right? It helps that his selection is bad ass.

May 24th - Damon Bell - "Damon began record collecting and djing at 16 years old, playing jazz, salsa, funk and Hip Hop; which led him into his deep passion for music. Learning to play the polyrhythms he heard in afro-cuban jazz, jazz fusion and hip hop breaks...he soon began to imitate those sounds by playing percussion and wind instruments. "Djing is just an extension of my love and relationship with music.." originally from San Diego, Damon has touched many grounds in the Americas and over seas playing with many of todays top producer/DJ's and recording artists. Look out for new music and mixed CD compilations in 2007."

May 31st - King Most - Beat maker and DJ about town, if you HAVEN'T heard of King Most by now, WHAT THE F*#K HAVE YOU BEEN DOING? Dude has been doing his thing for years now, with dj mixes for days out there and available not to mention the odd gig or few in SF, and the world.

LIFE CHANGING DJ ACCESSORY?

"The Audio Technica AT-618 is a rare accessory for DJ's that demand top quality sound and performance from their records. This hefty unit sits atop the record on the turntable spindle and applies 600grams of weight, holding the record firmly in place while stabilizing the record and improving overall sound quality. This is especially useful when playing in loud clubs where bass vibrations may be an issue or when recording your vinyl into your computer (for a cleaner recording)"-taken from turntablelab

LISTEN WHILE YOU WORK = SIMBAD

Simbad is one of MY favorite producer/DJs in the house scene at the moment and he's creating some very exciting new sounds having collaborated & remixed with a wide range of artists including Tony Allen, Roy Ayers, Bugz in the Attic & Marque Gilmore. His sophomore album “Supersonic Revelation” was released on Raw Fusion late last year with tracks being picked up by all sorts of acts from Giles Peterson to Laurent Garnier. This mix is for the mature listener as we explore the sounds of deep, tech, minimal house music, to broken beat and downtempo with a splash of techno. This is a well rounded mix that will keep you cleaning your house or help you through the work day.

Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber better known as TOSCA have produced their most magical and mesmerising album yet. A luxurious tapestry of analogue and digital sounds, submerged samples and live instruments; 'No Hassle' evolves and expands into an hour-long ambient symphony. The title reflects not only the duo's laidback approach to making music but their whole philosophy of life. Check out more tracks from "Tosca"

SMILE NOW, CRY LATER-SUNNY AND THE SUNLINERS

SWAP MUSIC WITH YOUR HOMMIES... NOW IN CONVENIENT SIZE

If you’re anything like me then you’re always running around with your iPod and wanting to swap and share tracks (legally I might add) with your friends. This new gizmo, which I will refer to as the iPod to iPod transfer device, (seeing as that it lacks one of those fancy names) has made the process of song sharing that much easier.

Your iPod is attached to your friend’s iPod, using this device as a docking port for both MP3 players. The nice feature of this sharing tool, is that you can set it to Mac or PC formatting and it will ensure a quick transfer (approximately 5seconds for a 3 minute song or a 30 minute video in 3 minutes)

It also allows you to transfer other types of files by simply adjusting the setting to disk drive mode and will work for at least 1 and a half hours on its rechargeable battery life. However, if rechargeable batteries aren’t your vibe, never fear, the tool comes with an AC adaptor that charges the tool in 4 hours.

The tool also acts as a charger as it charges your iPods when connected.

Remember I mentioned something along the lines of “legality?” Well, songs transferred with DRM (AKA Digital Rights Management) will require the appropriate password authorization in order to work on the accompanying iPod.

All in all … a lovely, lightweight and reasonably priced option ($99.95) to consider when you and your mates are sitting at the café for a song swapping session

IM SELLING MY RECORDS, TURNTABLES AND GEAR TO BECOME A SHAOLIN MONK

Recent Activision acquisition FreeStyleGames is hard at work on DJ Hero, a music rhythm game that will let gamers scratch to the beat of popular mash-ups with a laptop turntable peripheral, informed sources tell us today.

The game, which has been in development for nearly two years, is expected to hit shelves next summer and will likely include the ability to use Guitar Hero guitars for versus mode face-offs.

The controller, key to the game's success, has been through nearly a half-dozen iterations.

In the latest form, the device looks a lot like a simplified DJ Deck. There is a platter for scratching which will act like the strum toggle on a Guitar Hero guitar. Above the platter are three buttons for sampling. The controller also includes a cross fader and a sound effects dial which will act like the whammy bar in Guitar Hero.

Instead of flowing the musical notes down a guitar neck, DJ Hero will flow the music down and around a virtual record in a half arc. Either left top to middle bottom if you are left handed, or right top to middle bottom if you are right handed.

To play you will have to either hold a sample button and scratch, just hold a button or just scratch as the neon icons flow around the virtual vinyl.

Currently the wireless controller has grooves molded into the bottom so it will sit comfortably in a player's lap, though the team is also looking into legs for the deck so gamers can play while standing up.

The game in its current form features all mash-ups, think Beyonce Vs Jimi Hendrix, 50 cent Vs Beastie Boys. If they can nail the interface and get licensing for the music this could be a mammoth hit. Then again I love mash-ups.

The 4 Basic Food Groups : CMYK

Dert's flavor is soo unpredictable. I have been gettin a lot of feed back when I play this. I played this @ Amoeba's in Hollywood last Friday and the only people that hit me up were DJs. Thought that was dope. So this is definitely blog-worthy to me. You can peep this on DertBeats , Itunes , etc... I even heard him on DJ Jamad's Mixshow a few weeks ago. I was all, DAAYYAAM.. like that!

DAM-FUNK - UNRELEASED MATERIAL

I RAN INTO DAM FUNK LAST WEEK WHEN THE STONES THROW TOUR WAS IN SAN FRANCISCO. THE SHOW WAS GREAT, AND DAM DID HIS USUAL JOB OF PLAYING TOP NOTCH RECORDS WHILE FEEDING THE CROWD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT EACH ARTIST. AFTER HIS SET WE CHOPPED IT UP FOR A MINUTE AND I ASKED HIM IF IT WAS OK TO PUT UP "SPECIAL DIMENSION" A TRACK I RECEIVED WHILE HE WAS TOURING IN EUROPE. DAMON GAVE ME THE THUMBS UP.

DJ Premier, Questlove, and now Q-Tip to share some great stories about thier personal history and inside scoop on classic hip-hop moments. he talks about: how Busta almost became a part of Tribe, meeting Phife, battling Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and working with the Native Tongues. The video above is a classic clip of Q-Tip’s impression of D’angelo, an outburst from Questlove, and his first encounters with Dilla. Thanks,

Build a 303

Ever want that classic 303 acid house sound but don't have 2000 clams handy. The price of vintage synthesizers has become outrageous, so why not take matters in your own hands. Rather then pay some synth miser thousands of dollars for a 30 year dusty box you can build your own at a fraction of the price. With some soldering skills, a dysfunctional social live and an obsessive personality you will be cranking home made synts in no time. Here are a few place where analog synthesizer kits can be attained.

DJ GUILLERMO = SWEATER FUNK / MAGNIFICENT 7

With each of these DJ Q&As we do, it's becoming increasingly obvious: Sweater Funk has become a hot night (and in that steamy basement venue, we mean that phrase in more ways than one) for San Francisco funk. When the rest of the city goes to bed early for the big week ahead, DJs and dancers alike take it down to Chinadown to sweat out the best in boogie disco every Sunday. Helping lead the charge is DJ Guillermo, a dude who DJs pretty much everything but mash-ups. He's got crates of everything from hip-hop to Latin groove to old school disco. And from the sound of things, he can also make a mean breakfast scramble.

Name: Jacob Pena aka DJ Guillermo

Club night(s):
Sweater Funk - 80's funk, boogie disco, soulful steppers (every sunday night @ Li Po, free 9pm- 1:30am). The Magnificent 7 - Funk, hip hop, disco, house, dancehall, rock and anything else we feel like throwing into the mix (@ various clubs around the city). Colombia! - Classic cumbia, salsa & Afro Latin (@ various venues around the city). Mercy, Mercy Baby - Soul, boogaloo, Brazilian & rocksteady (every 2nd Weds. @ Casanova - free 9pm-2am). Good Friends and Evil Companions - Could be power pop, post punk, samba soul, hip-hop or whatever else I'm in the mood for that night, but it's always a good time! (every 1st sat. & 3rd thurs @ Dalva, free, 10pm-2am). Behind The Groove - Sweater Funk & Hear The Sounds crew play boogie, electro funk & more @ Koko every 4th Saturday - free 9pm-2am.

Style(s) of music you spin:
Depends on the night. Any thing from old Colombian cumbias, new underground hip-hop, boogie disco, 70's & early 80's pop/post punk, dirty soul, funk, Brazilian, salsa, house, dub, dancehall....choose one of my nights, you're bound to find something you'll like.
So what's your story, in 100 words or less? Decided to DJ in Long Beach, CA. in 1998, when I started my own Latin night. I later became a resident at a local soul club called Get On The Good Foot, then moved to San Francisco in 2005. Since then I've been paying my dues while trying to push a grittier & more authentic Latin sound and a funky boogie disco sound. Thank god I fell in with some of the coolest DJ's in the city! Not just in the crews I play with, but with the caliber of folks we have rolling through our nights to hear the tunes. I'm constantly trying to keep the heads interested and the dancefloor happy.

Wii SPRAY

THIS IS SO TIGHT...

The foundational basis for the project goes well beyond replacing real graffiti as an art form. Moreover, WiiSpray
is to be seen as an interface to give graffiti a new virtual level surpassing tactile boundaries of the tangible world.

Within the system, there is a symbiosis of digital and analog as well as overcoming restrictions of distance and time. An advantage of the system proves to possess a user-friendly design simple enough for children to use. The virtual canvas allows the user to decide what is saved and what is discarded, all the while keeping the surrounding area clean and free of what otherwise would be a messy form of media.
