SWEATER FUNK CREW APRIL NEWS LETTER

SWEATER FUNK - APRIL NEWSLETTER

Gawddamn March was a blast, & it's still got some life in it! Before I get into the April schedule I want to throw some things out there regarding some Sweater Funk Family birthday celebrations this weekend:

Tonight @ Koko we got the Behind the Groove party with guest Selector Kirk celebrating the birth of the one and only VINYL RICHIE!

Tomorrow night @ Li Po we rock Sweater Funk with DJ PROOF on the decks dedicating his ENTIRE set to the birth of the one and only........DJ PROOF! That's right y'all, it's a boogie birthday bashment weekend in SF! Call in sick on Monday.

APRIL'S Funkin' guests:

April 5th - DAVE AJU - SF's funky techno freak DAVE AJU is afraid of the Chinese Whiskey. We're going to have to blind fold him so we can lead him past the bar to the boogie basement to get him safely to the turntables without spooking. It's a process, but it's well worth it as this dude is a monster when he gets behind that groove no matter what he plays.

April 12th - MAX KANE of 4ONEFUNK and DJ SMOKESTACK - We've been waiting for our man Arjuno to come out and do his thing with us, this is a funky funky dude.

April 19th - BEATELECTRIC - Check the blog, these dudes know their shit and are some sick DJs who know how to throw a good party. Expect a smoke machine and lasers and wear those dancing shoes.

April 26th - DJ OM - Crates for days, he's gonna take you way out, where you never been before.

Hip Hop on anotha tip...

Paul Dateh is this SH**! With Paul and Inka One is like no other combo I've eva seen. Unfortunately I missed the show last nite and caught Paul @ the end to say peace. Inka One is a resident who does a monthly event called Boom Box in Los Angeles.

On his first day at The University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Dateh dropped his major in Violin Performance and enrolled in the Jazz Studies program instead. The move shocked his colleagues as it was hard to understand why anyone would walk away from fourteen years of classical training to begin learning an entirely new musical discipline. But, Dateh knew that he wanted to be more than just a classical musician; his goal was to become a musician, in every possible way.

He is a singer, an award-winning songwriter, and an instrumentalist. His can be heard on releases by various artists within both mainstream and underground hip hop circles, and he can currently be seen performing throughout the United States with his band “The Live Movement”.

JOSEPH ANTHONY FIDDLER

Having studied jazz in school and with Harold McKinney while growing up in Detroit, Joseph Amp Fiddler began his career in popular music when he went on tour with the group Enchantment. Later, in the mid 80's, after joining George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, he toured worldwide with the group and extensively worked as keyboard player and co-producer in studio recordings. He also performed with Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Prince, Seal and Maxwell. Amp produced his own album, Mr. Fiddler "With Respect" on Elektra in 1990.
More recently, he has released various singles for UK Genuine label and has been working with Carl Craig and Planet-e's various projects (Detroit Experiment, Moodymann, John Arnold, Recloose ...

STRICTLY RHYTHM = DANCE CLASSICS

The New York-based label Strictly Rhythm was set up in 1989 by genial dance music mogul Mark Finkelstein and A&R expert Gladys Pizarro. Strictly Rhythm has since blazed a trail to become one of the most influential labels of all time. In its heyday, releases from George Morel, DJ Pierre, Todd Terry, or Masters At Work wowed dancefloors across the world. The label subsequently expanded into Europe, moving into the commercial sector with a diverse roster including Reel 2 Real, Josh Wink, and the young Armand Van Helden. Strictly has continued to tread the line between commercially and critically acclaimed house music with releases like Ultra Naté's "Free."

Strictly Rhythm Folded in October 2002 after entering into a venture with Warner Music Group nine months earlier, but after four years of legal wrangling, Mark Finkelstein was able to get control of the label, its trademark, and all recordings and publishing rights. In 2006, the label was ready to relaunch worldwide with the assistance of the US arm of the British label Defected; digital downloads for sale soon followed. First Releases were remixes of "Higher State of Consciousness" by Josh Wink and a new single by Todd Terry, and its Web site was reactivated..

These DJ's don't take requests

So lastnight I was @ Bar Lubitsch spinning with DJ Lady Sha. Every DJ's worst nightmare are people who request songs. Next time bring the record and I'll play it next time you come thru. Excuse the rudegirl, but this is speaking on the other side of the booth. Don't get me wrong, requests can be cool sometimes, but please don't throw us off ;)

I thought it was funny what all my other friends that spin were commenting about my status. Those words were heard from JUN.. a buyer for Amoeba's in LA. I was laughin for about 2 hours, and could not stop as the comments were posted.

On a Lovers Rock...

One of my all time favorite songs. The original song is from David Ruffin. Bitty Mc Lean really got me on this one. This is a classic piece to add to your collection.

My boy JFX laced me with his latest 45 with Shinehead last year and I happen to see it the other day. So here it is. This riddim alone will have you wanting more.

Beats & Bjork

Beats and Dert is the perfect combination. When it comes to music, he definitely lays it on thick. I recently went to Boombox, Los Angeles and he played a set that just killed it. The best part is his steeze is so unpredictable. With an amazing female vocalist "Bjork" who compliments the beat tape, this is addictive.

"FINE TUNED TO THE BOOM, PROLLY LIFED WHEN I WROTE THIS" - KING D (LPSD / ARMORY MASSIVE)

SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS SONG BUT I GOT MY FIRST COPIES OF THIS BOTH BLACK VINYL & THE RED THAT CAME OUT LATER AT "TOOLS OF DA TRADE". A TRUE PIECE OF SAN DIEGO HISTORY. REMINDS ME OF A FEW PLACES . . . IF U KNOW U KNOW IF U DON'T IT'S ALL GOOD. BAHAMADIA "TOTAL WRECK" - DIRTY

This is a classic for me when I was just a youth. It came out in 94 and I heard it first on z90 here in San Diego. The dj was Kutfather and I didn't know him at the time, but i've been not only lucky enough to meet the man himself but he's came through to check my dj set's here and now (Watch out for Kutfather joining me at The Office Bar SOON). That show (I forgot the name) included Hip-Hop, Reggae & Dancehall & has influenced me in many ways. I still remember hearing Jeru's "come clean", Bahamadia's "total wreck", Sister Nancy's "Bam Bam", LPSD "back acha" for the first time on this show. Thank you Kutfather.

I recently attended the San Diego Record Show & came home with the 12" of this Bahamadia Gem . . . Come with me on a trip down memory lane:

DRUM AND BASS DUO CHASE AND STATUS ALBUM OUT NOW. HIGHLY RECOMENDED

Chase & Status Intro: Saul Milton and Will Kennard really do start as they mean to go on. Since the birth of their drum and bass career in 2004, things have been moving extremely rapidly for this duo.

Their first release on Renegade Hardware (a remix of Future Cut's 20/20) was followed with big tracks such as Love's Theme, Iron Fist and Hoodrat on prominent labels such as Bingo, BC Presents and Habit. DJ's: Andy C, Mampi Swift, Friction, Zinc, Pendulum, Fabio and Bad Company have shown huge support for their releases which has only been further affirmed by regular radio airplay.

Beginning their DJ career just over 9 years ago, Chase&Status have witnessed the constant stylistic changes the industry has been through. Their sets reflect on a wide spectrum of drum&bass, as is shown in their Jan 2005 Studio Mix on DnB Arena, their guest mix on 1Xtra and of course with their live DJ sets. 2005 has been a good year for the duo with 'Barbarians', 'Menace' and, 'Glitch' all dropping on Renegade Hardware, 'Loader' on BC Presents, and a remix for Bingo of Mood 2 Swing's 'I Got Love'.

Forthcoming, the pair are making their BreakBeat Kaos debut with 'Duppy Man' Ft Capleton b/w 'Top Shotta' Ft Roll Deep...The massive 'Duppy Man' is being supported by top jock Andy C alongside DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio1), Skitz, Seani B and he Heartless Crew (1Xtra). 'Top Shotta' Ft Roll Deep has also been getting huge support from across the board form DJs such as Cameo, Semtex, Richie Vee, Neesha, Ace & Invisible (1Xtra), Mary Ann Hobbs (Radio1), Lucy Ambache (Choice Fm), Logan Sama (Kiss), Pendulum, Mark One, Rossi B and Plasticman to name a few. Both tracks are currently on the 'A' list on 1Xtra and 'Roll Deep' who appear on 'Top Shotta' have been flying high in the UK national charts with tracks like 'The Avenue' and 'Shake A Leg.'

The pair have also received immense support for their recent BreakBeat creations under their 'Loopdigga' guise. 'Timewarp' on Guerilla Tactics has had regular rotation on Radio1 from Mary Anne Hobbs & Annie Nightingale and on Kiss100 from Tayo. The track has also received a lot of attention being spun by the likes of: Stanton Warriors, Aquasky, The Autobots and The Breakfastaz.

I'M REALLY FEEL THIS DRUM AND BASS DUO AT THE MOMENT. THERE CHANGING THE SOUND OF D&B, CROSSING GENRE'S, AND TAKING THE SCENE BY STORM. IF YOU LIKE THESE CATS PEEP SIMILAR INNOVATIVE ARTIST, SUB FOCUS, PENDULUM, HIGH CONTRAST..

SOUL SESSION PARTY IN / OUTOOR FEST (LA) NEXT FRIDAY 3-13

DONT MISS THESE CATS = SUPPORT YOU LOCAL ART - MUSIC - AND CULTURE

AURELITO & SHAKESPEARE, creators + operators of the Los Angeles based sound system have been contributing to the City Of Angels' music culture and art scene ever ! since they joined forces as the dynamic duo, internationally known as
I&I SOUND SYSTEM.

Aurelito, originally from the Philippine Islands and Black Shakespeare a Jamaica born native brought I&I SOUND to life in the late 90's, bringing more life and unity to the people of LA. Their true mission was to spread LOVE by bringing music directly to the people. Much of the duo's thirst for unique and creative outlets plus the universal laws guided I&I to create Aurelito's idea and concept of building an original mobile sound system. The two restored and hand painted a 1969 classic ice cream truck and customized it with original artwork, turntables, mixer, amps and speakers - "knowing that music is an occupation that should literally move you".

Their classic vehicle was crowned DESTINY. Since the birth of Destiny, the duo have been spreading posi! tive vibrations far and wide - driving throughout Los Angeles ! County to the many different barrios, communities, towns, valleys and cities in The City of Angels. The two have been traveling across the West Coast serving sweet musical treats from their patented mobile sound station - setting up and broadcasting at the many different outdoor festivals, art openings, concerts, film screenings, record release and after parties, grade schools, highschools, colleges, community based events, film shoots, private parties, barbecues, parking lots, street corners, and public parks.

DAFT PUNK = WRITING THE SCORE FOR THE REMAKE OF DISNEY'S "TRON"

WHY ARE MOVIE DIRECTORS REMAKING "CLASSICS" THAT DON'T EVEN NEED TO BE TOUCH. I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND TODAY'S SOCIETY IN REGARDS OF RIPPING OFF THE 80'S. I ALSO HEARD THERE REMAKING "TOTAL RECALL". BLAHHHHH. USE THESE GREAT MOVIES AS INSPIRATION, DON'T RIP OFF / BITE CLASSICS.. ALTHOUGH, I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THE SOUND TRACK

If you're going to film the sequel to a 1982 film about evil computers, you might as well get France's finest robot DJs to do the soundtrack. None other than Daft Punk have signed on to write the score of Tron 2.0, a techno-stalgia trip due in 2011.

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter will join director Joseph Kosinski and Lost screenwriters Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz on the Disney project, according to the usually-reliable Upcoming Film Scores blog. This will be Daft Punk's first original film score, despite writing much of the music for the Interstella 5555 anime and directing their own sci-fi epic, Electroma.

Tron 2.0 – also rumoured to be called TR2N – is the "next chapter" in the story of hacker Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and his efforts against the evil Master Control Program. Bridges will again appear, though House's Olivia Wilde will star alongside Garrett Hedlund, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The original Tron was scored by the influential electronic composer Wendy Carlos.

Smith & Mighty. Take Notes

How can u resist? Madd Sound Steeze with combined elements. Smith & Mighty definitley has me @ the palm of their hands.
Smith & Mighty are a Drum & Bass/Trip hop group from Bristol, consisting of Rob Smith, Ray Mighty and Peter D Rose. Long before Bristol had become a recognized stronghold for downtempo trip-hop and spy-soundtrack dubs, the duo of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty teamed in the late '80s for two early breakbeat tracks, "Walk on By" and "Anyone Who Had a Heart." The anachronistic fusion of sophisticated Burt Bacharach productions with laidback hip-hop prefigured trip-hop's later fascination with the more polished end of '60s adult-pop. The pair also produced the Top Ten hit "Wishing on a Star" for the Fresh Fours, then signed with ffrr Records (who were looking for a production team with crossover abilities similar to Soul II Soul).
Enjoy!
